Albert Gayle "Al" McGuire, 91 of Idaho Falls, Idaho, passed away August 24, 2014, at Morning Star Senior Living. He had been under the care of Encompass Hospice for the past three months. Al was born April 24, 1923, in Riverton, Wyoming, to Albert Gayle McGuire Sr. and Ruth West McGuire. He spent most of his childhood in Lander, Wyoming, where he graduated from high school in 1941. He attended Shurtliff College in Illinois for two years and then joined the Army Corps of Engineers in 1943. He served in France during the Battle of the Bulge. Following his discharge from the Army, he attended the Missouri School of Mines, where he received a B.S. degree in civil engineering. He also returned to Lander long enough to marry Carol May Clark, his high school sweetheart on September 8, 1947. After graduation, he and Carol moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he worked for the Wyoming Highway Department, designing bridges. Their first daughter, Pegge, was born there in 1949. Al answered an advertisement for employment with Phillips Petroleum Company and was accepted. They moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Their second daughter, Susan, was born there in 1953. Phillips was recruiting employees to move to Idaho Falls to work on their new contract with the Atomic Energy Commission. Al applied and after less than a year in Bartlesville, the family moved to Idaho Falls in 1954. Al worked in construction engineering at the Atomic Reactor Testing Station (now Idaho National laboratory) and was involved in the construction of many of the facilities there, including the Materials Test Reactor (MTR), the Power Burst facility (PBF), and the Loss of Fluid Test Facility (LOFT). He managed a quality assurance group for several years and then managed a construction project management group at the Chemical Processing Plant (now INTEC). While living in Idaho Falls, Al and Carol's third daughter, Cathy, was born in 1958. They were both actively involved in the First Baptist Church, including the construction of the building on John Adams Parkway. Al organized a group of laymen to provide ministerial services to area churches who had lost their pastor or who needed coverage for vacations and illnesses. This group served churches in Roberts, Mud Lake, Dubois, Jackson and elsewhere. In 1980, Al retired from the Site and he and Carol moved to Berkeley, California, while he attended the American Baptist Seminary of the West. He received a master of divinity degree in pastoral ministry. He was ordained in the American Baptist ministry in July 1983. Al served churches in Helix, Oregon, and Layton, Utah, as a full time pastor. Then he worked as a temporary minister in churches in Salt Lake City; Elko, Nevada; Chapel of the Pines in Island Park and Arco, Idaho. Al and Carol moved back to Idaho Falls in 2000 to be near family and friends. Carol died in 2002. Al is survived by his daughters: Pegge Steele of Idaho Falls; Susan McGuire (Robert Warburton) of Jackson, Wyoming; and Cathy Lee (Michael) of St. Louis, Missouri, and one grandson, Michael Lee of St. Louis. A private family service will be held at a later date. Cremation was done under the direction of Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First St., Idaho Falls, Idaho.
