Obituary

Alexander "Alex" Demitropoulos, age 85, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, died on March 6, 2016 in Idaho Falls. He was the husband of Ila M. (Rock) Demitropoulos, and the son of the late William and Leona (Myers) Demitropoulos. Born in Salem, Massachusetts on October 5, 1930, Alex was raised in Massachusetts and graduated from Lynn Vocational High School in 1948.

He is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Alex served in many callings in the church including High Priest Group Leader and he enjoyed serving as the Ward Executive Secretary for many years.

He enlisted in the United States Navy in July of 1948 to serve on submarines. Some of the submarines he was assigned to were the USS Corsair, the USS Rasher, the USS Nautilus, the USS Scamp, the USS Paricutin, and the ammunitions ship, the USS Cavalla. He served two tours to Vietnam, was the Officer-in-Charge of the Naval Base in Bayview, Idaho. He received from the Secretary of the Navy (Vice Admiral, J.H. King, Jr.) the Navy Commendation Medal for meritorious service while serving with friendly foreign forces in the Republic of Vietnam from April 1969 to April 1970. He also received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Navy Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnamese Civil Actions I Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He loved serving in the Navy and had many great friends that he stayed in contact with.

In 1954, Alex was assigned to train at the Naval Reactors Facility here in Idaho, when he met Ila Rock. They shared some fun and crazy times while dating and on April 8, 1955 Alex and Ila were married in Idaho Falls.

He retired from the Navy on August 1, 1970. In his retirement he taught Jr. ROTC at Bonneville High School for five years. In his free time, he served in the Volunteer Bonneville County Deputy Sheriffs Department. He also worked at Electrical Wholesale for sixteen years then retired in 1993 and spent time fishing, camping, traveling, and enjoying his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Alex was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, and his sister, Paulette Langone.

He is survived by his wife, Ila; two sons, Steven (Mickie) Demitropoulos and Peter (Patrice) Demitropoulos both of Idaho Falls; a brother, George (Anna) Demitropoulos of Lynn, Massachusetts; twin sisters, Elaine (Dave) Demitropoulos- Moody of Peabody, Massachusetts and Joanne (Benjamin) Tague of San Diego, California; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, 12 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held in his honor at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, March 12, 2016 in the Idaho Falls LDS 9th Ward Chapel, 395 Second Street, Bishop David L. Gemar will be officiating. A Viewing will be held for family and friends on Friday, March 11, 2016 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First Street and Saturday at the church from12:00-12:45pm.  Burial will be in Fielding Cemetery where military rites will be performed.
