Obituary

Bessie Short Sant, formerly of Salt Lake City, Utah, 94, died December 18, 2009 at Fairwinds Retirement Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho. She was born November 13, 1915, in Toccopola, Mississippi, to Louis Fontain Short and Minnie Ola Nowlin Rogers Short. She lived in Toccopola, Mississippi until 1931 when she moved with her mother and sister, Ruby, to Oxford, Mississippi. Bessie graduated from the University High School in Oxford in 1933. She then attended the University of Mississippi from which she graduated in 1937 with a degree in Bachelor of Science and Commerce. After graduation, she worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority in Knoxville, Tennessee. It was there that she met Paul T. Sant of Clifton, Idaho, who was attending the University of Tennessee. They married May 18, 1940, in Knoxville. They then moved to Wilmington, North Carolina, where Paul, an officer in the Army, was stationed. When Paul was later stationed in Germany during World War II, Bessie moved back to Toccopola. After Paul returned to the states in 1946, they moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where Bessie lived until 2007 when she moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho. Bessie was a member of the First Baptist Church of Salt Lake City where she served as their financial secretary for eight years. She was a den mother in the Cub Scouts and a Boy Scout supporter while her sons were involved in the scouting program. She was also a PTA president of Hillside Junior High. Bessie enjoyed gardening, sewing, knitting, and needlework. Survivors include sons Dr. Gary L. Sant (Laraine) of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Dr. Donald T. Sant (Jacqueline) of Golden, Colorado. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Michael Sant (Jennifer) and great- granddaughters, Abby and Callie Sant of Riverton, Utah; Diana Ball (Ryan) and great-grandsons Derek and Gavin Ball of Riverton, Utah; Anita Younker (Jarod) of State College, Pennsylvania; Catherine Lazar (Lawrence) of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; and Marjorie Sant of Boulder, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul T. Sant, her parents, her brother Horace Rogers and her sister Ruby Gardner. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at the First Baptist Church, 777 South 1300 E, Salt Lake City. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 to 10:45 prior to the services. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park under the direction of Coltrin Mortuary of Idaho Falls, Idaho. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to First Baptist Church Memorial Fund at 777 South 1300 East, Salt Lake City, UT 84102.
