She was born at home on March 3, 1923, to Adolf and Anna Louise Wyss, Swiss immigrants, in Grace, Idaho. She was raised and attended schools in Grace. In 1941, she graduated from Grace High School. After graduation, she studied to be a registered nurse at Pocatello General Hospital. When World War II started, she joined the United States Marine Corps Women's Reserve. Following basic training at Hunter College in New York, she was stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Following her training there, she was transferred to Camp Pendleton in southern California and remained there for the duration of the war.
After coming home to Grace, she took flying lessons and obtained her private pilots license. Flying was something that she truly loved.
She met Ed Lang in Grace while he was visiting friends there. Following his discharge from the Army, they were married on July 10, 1948, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Ed and Betty came to Roberts in 1950 and purchased the Roberts Hotel and Bar and later ran the café as well.
She was elected Mayor of Roberts in 1968 and enjoyed her service to the community in that role as well as being a charter member of the Roberts Garden Club. She also served on the Roberts Library Board. She was chairman of the Market Lake Days Celebration and she was involved with that celebration for several years.
In 1975, she went to work at the INEEL as the head baker at Central and also at TAN. She became very well known for her delicious desserts.
Gardening and raising orchids, making homemade candy and chocolates and cake decorating were some of her many interests and hobbies. She was always an excellent and creative cook.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and many friends.
She is survived by her son, Ed J. (Elnora) Lang of Roberts; daughter, Lianne (Tom) Buxton of Roberts; grandchildren: Ryan (Brittany) Buxton, Nicolle Buxton, Robert Lang and Michelle Lang; and great-grandsons: Jason and Jared Buxton, who were a very special joy to her; 2 older sisters: Freda (Ray) Gallant of Anchorage, Alaska; and Jo Merwin (Gordan, deceased) of Spokane, Washington; and a younger brother, Robert Gary Wyss of Grace; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Memorial services with the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be held February 21, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at the Roberts Community Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First St., Idaho Falls
