Betty Jane Dalling Smith, 62, formerly of Idaho Falls, died August 20, 2009, at her home in Shelley, Idaho, of brain cancer. Betty was born January 12, 1947, in Rexburg, Idaho, to John L. and Mildred Jenkins Dalling. She grew up in and attended schools in Moore, Idaho, until the family moved to Idaho Falls in 1960. She graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 1965. She attended Ricks College and received her Bachelor's degree in elementary education from Brigham Young University. She married Lynn Dennis Smith on April 12, 1968, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Together they raised 9 children. They have lived in the Idaho Falls area most of their lives. Betty taught elementary school in Lark, Utah, and in Idaho Falls. She taught at Tiebreaker Elementary for 14 years. She enjoyed being a teacher and loved her students. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held numerous leadership positions in each organization. She especially loved teaching the Primary children and her recent calling teaching in the Relief Society. She was a life-long learner. She enjoyed reading, traveling, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She appreciated music and shared her talents as a piano accompanist with many. Her family was her obsession. She attended as many special events with her grandchildren, children and husband as possible. She was proud of her family and made them a prioity in her life. She is survived by her husband Lynn Smith of Shelley; her children Angela (Erik) Sackett of Idaho Falls; Michelle (Craig) Benson of Newton, Utah; Matthew (Rebacca) Smith of Kennewick, Washington; Kristi Yelton of Portland, Oregon; Kimberly (Chad) Shanks of Idaho Falls; Heather (Jacob) Dumars of Shelley; Janette Smith of Providence, Utah; Stephen (Esther) Smith of Idaho Falls; Jeffery Smith of Salt Lake City and Riggins, Idaho; 18 grandchildren; her father, John L. (Artell) Dalling of Idaho Falls; a brother, Kenneth (Bobbie Jo) Dalling of Idaho Falls; a sister, JoAnn Staley of Idaho Falls; and her step-brothers: Mick (Rena) Rowberry of Idaho Falls and David (Janis) Rowberry of Washington DC. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mildred Dalling; her brother and sister in-law, Steven and Nedra Dalling; a granddaughter, Kaeleen Shanks; a brother-in-law, William Staley; and nephew, Scott Staley. Funeral services will be Monday, August 24, 2009, at 11:00 AM at the Shelley LDS First Ward Chapel, 184 N. Park, in Shelley with Bishop's counselor, Merline Price officiating. The family will meet with friends Sunday, August 23, 2009, from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First Street, Idaho Falls, and Monday from 9:30-10:30 AM at the church.
