IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Beulah Marie
Lucas
April 14, 1936 – August 22, 2023
Beulah Marie Lucas, age 87, passed away after a brief illness on Tuesday, August 22, 2023. Beulah was a long-time resident of Idaho Falls where she moved with her husband Neil and youngest son Ray in 1988.
Beulah was born in Hagerman, New Mexico to Sam and Ruby Hart on April 14, 1936. She grew up in the town of Tatum, New Mexico on a small ranch on the outskirts of town. One of five children, Beulah's childhood was spent either at school, watching her brothers, or helping around the ranch.
In the late forties, Beulah met Neil Lucas and the couple married in 1952. Shortly after being married, they moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico where Neil went to New Mexico A&M to get his engineering degree and Beulah worked at White Sands Missile Range as a top-secret file clerk to help support the couple through Neil's college education. In 1958, just weeks after Neil's graduation, their first child was born, Mark Lucas. Less than a year later, the couple and their new baby moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming where Neil had taken a job working on the newly deployed Atlas intercontinental ballistic missile. During their time in Cheyenne, their second child, Alan Lucas, was born in 1961. About a year later the family moved to Roswell, New Mexico so Neil could work on the improved version of Atlas missile. Beulah's third son, Ray Lucas was born there in 1964.
The next 20 years saw Beulah move with her family to Artesia, Carlsbad, Las Cruces, and Silver City, New Mexico then to Colorado Springs, Colorado and back to New Mexico to live in Albuquerque. Beulah would spend this time raising her three boys and focusing on her artwork. Beulah's skill in painting landscapes and portraits during this time would improve to the point of her being able to sell several paintings to individuals and local art galleries. Her passion for oil painting and sketching would continue until her death.
In 1988 she relocated with Neil and her youngest son Ray for the last time to Idaho Falls, ID. It was here that she developed a new passion for growing flowers. Over the next 30+ years, Beulah turned her yard into a flower garden full of tulips, roses, daffodils, and other assorted flowers. Eventually she came to be known in the area as the flower lady because of the dazzling display of flowers she had planted which delighted neighbors and others who passed by each spring and summer.
Beulah's primary job in life ended up being the main caregiver to her youngest son Ray. Her husband Neil died in 2001 leaving Beulah and Ray alone to look after each other until his death in January of 2022.
Beulah was known for her positive and outgoing personality, despite having to face many serious challenges in her life. She was always upbeat and had the uncanny ability to fix nearly anything that was broken. Whether she was confronted with a nonfunctioning dishwasher, vacuum cleaner, furnace, car radio, or whatever - she would find a way to get it working again. She was extremely independent and tried never to be a burden or a bother to others. Her independence was both a blessing and a curse, with an example of her stubbornness and independence demonstrated when she was in her early eighties, and she went up on the roof to clear some snow despite the frigid cold and windy weather. The ladder she had used to get on the roof blew over and rather than calling for help, she simply climbed back down to the ground using a tree that was overhanging the roof. This was but one example of her independence and unwillingness to let a difficult situation stop her from doing what she wanted to do.
Beulah was preceded in death by both parents, Sam and Ruby, her sister Geraldine, her brother Richard, her husband Neil, and her son Ray. She is survived by her sons Mark and Alan Lucas, her brothers Sam and Scott Hart and their wives Glenda and Lori as well as her grandchildren Nicole, Kristal, and Max, and great granddaughters Skylar and Chloe.
Beulah was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mom, grandmother, great grandmother, and neighbor and will be greatly missed.
