Billie "Bill" J. Newby, 85, of Idaho Falls, passed away Sunday, January 13, 2013, at his home. Bill was born in Nyssa, Oregon, on June 2, 1927, to Tom S. Newby and Ruby Minton Newby. His father was a traveling mechanic for Morrison-Knudsen Company so the family moved frequently for several years, finally settling in Boise when Bill was in the fourth grade. Bill completed his education there and graduated from Boise High School in 1945. Bill joined the Navy on his 18th birthday. Since the war in Europe had ended in May and the Japanese surrendered in August, Bill received his Honorable Discharge after serving 15 months. Bill continued his education at Boise Junior College and then transferred to Oregon State College in Corvallis where he earned his bachelors and master's degrees in chemistry. On September 2, 1950, Bill married Gladys Shook and they lived in Corvallis where their son, John was born. After graduating from Oregon State, Bill was employed by Phillips Petroleum Company in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. In 1954, he was transferred by Phillips to Idaho Falls to work at the INEL. He was awarded several patents, and earned the title of a Fellow Scientist. Bill retired from the INEL in 1992. Through the years, Bill enjoyed playing the violin in the orchestra in junior high, high school and at Boise Junior College. He enjoyed square dancing and traveling especially to England, Europe, and Hawaii. His greatest pleasure was working in his garden where he grew a large variety of flowers. He is survived by his wife, Gladys Newby of Idaho Falls, a daughter, Linda Newby Reimann of Idaho Falls, brothers: Jack (Louise) Newby and Gary (Pat) Newby both of Boise, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, John.
