She was raised on a farm with her brother, Jack. One of her favorite childhood memories was of driving a goat cart to school. She lived with and took wonderful care of her paternal grandmother while attending high school. Her grandmother, though crippled at an early age by arthritis, was a shining example of courage to Bonnie. Bonnie graduated from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln General School of Nursing as a registered nurse in 1944. She met and nursed a recovering World War II hero, M. Kenneth Shane, and they were married in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1947. Their daughter, Peggy was born in 1948 in Omaha. They moved to Chicago, Illinois, where Ken attended Illinois Tech and graduated with a degree in Engineering. Michael was born in 1950. In 1952, the family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where her husband worked as a Senior Design Engineer and Bonnie was a stay-at-home mother. Carol was born in 1953. The family moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, in 1957. Ken was employed as a nuclear engineer at the INL site. Bonnie stayed at home mothering the children and occasionally taking a specialty nursing jobs at the Sacred Heart hospital. Mary was born in 1960. Bonnie was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and filled many callings of leadership and service. Following her husband's death, she served a mission to the LDS Church Family History Center in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1999. She is survived by her four children: Peggy (Ron) Summers of Idaho Falls; Mike Shane of Woodville, Idaho; Carol (David) Arnold of Medway, Ohio; and Mary (Mike) Peterson of Klamath Falls, Oregon; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, M. Kenneth Shane in 1997, her parents; a brother, Jack Schaefer; and a grandson.
