Obituary

Our brother, Bruce William Read, was called home to be with our parents too early on December 21, 2023, after a short but valiant battle with severe congestive heart failure. He was with his brother Doug and cousin Jill.

Bruce was born in Pocatello, Idaho, to William and Joyce Read joining 3 older brothers, Ken, Rob, and Jim; followed a few years later by a sister, Carole; and finally, the baby of the family, Doug.

Raised in Rigby, Idaho, Bruce spent many happy times visiting Grandma and Grandpa Burke in Iona, Idaho, spending time with his Hanks, Armstrong, and Blatter cousins. A lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Bruce served a full-time mission for the church in Scotland and Northern Ireland. While in Scotland he baptized a mother and her two twin daughters, after growing up one of the daughters moved to London England where she met and married artist Simon Dewey, many years later after having emigrated to Alberta she took her son to the MTC in Provo, UT. During this trip she began reflecting back on the missionaries who baptized her, looking up information she reached out to Bruce at mom and dad's house, they had a great conversation catching up and he was very proud of the fact that he had baptized her. For Christmas that year he bought the largest copy of the painting "Men of Galilee" he could for Mom. Which he kept after her death.

A loving and caring person, Bruce was there with Mom and Dad as most of the other siblings had moved on to other locations. Bruce provided great care and assistance to them through many years, often helping Mom and his Aunt Marg and Aunt Lilace with many errands and shopping as they all aged. As Mom and Dad aged, he often was their sole caregiver until Doug moved back in to help.

After Mom and Dad passed away, Bruce and Doug teamed up and rented an apartment together in Idaho Falls. Although the typical sibling squabbles happened, they were always there for each other and had a weekly tradition of going to at least one movie a week, enjoying many great movies and some not so great movies, seeing Expendables 4 as their last movie together just before his health started to really decline.

Bruce is survived by his brothers and sister and their spouses, Kenneth & Candee Read of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Robert & Jan Read of Las Vegas, Nevada; Jim and Rachel Read of Gilbert, Arizona; Carole and Rusty Sammons of Chandler, Arizona; and Doug Read of Idaho Falls, Idaho; many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, as well as cousin, Jill Armstrong (who he and Doug considered an adopted sister) and many other cousins. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Bill and Joyce; great nephews, Travis, Tate, and Carver; his grandparents, his aunts and uncles, and several cousins.

The family would like to thank the members of the Chandler family in Rigby, Idaho, especially Paul and Allan and their children (who he considered extended nieces and nephews) for many years of great friendship and game playing.

The family would also like to thank the nurses and doctors of Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center as well as the nurses, staff, and residents at Templeview Transitional Care Center in Rexburg, Idaho, for their care and support the last few months of his life.

A visitation for family and friends will take place from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Saturday, January 6, 2024, at Coltrin Mortuary in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Cremation will follow and a Celebration of Life will take place at a later date with the family traveling to Yellowstone National Park to honor Bruce as he spent many happy days visiting Yellowstone. Bruce's ashes will be buried next to his mom and dad in the Iona Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.coltrinmortuary.com.
