Obituary

Clair Brent Oler, 79, passed away on Saturday, March 3, 2012, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 14, 1932, to goodly parents, Donald J. and Mary Ellen Young Oler in Stirling, Alberta, Canada. He grew up in Stirling, where he attended a small community school. He was very talented and participated in musical productions in high school with a traveling group singing and dancing. While he never finished high school, he received his high school diploma in 1996, and was very proud of this accomplishment. He joined the Navy at the age of 18 years, and served in the First Marine Division as a hospital corpsman in a MASH unit in Korea. When he returned to the States, he was stationed near Boston where he met Susan Ida Marano. They married on March 24, 1954. He was so smitten with her that he forgot to mention that he was 15 years younger than her. She was also raising her first 4 children alone at the time. He was discharged honorably on September 9, 1954. He also received his US citizenship in 1971. In 1955, their daughter Stephanie was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts. They later moved to California where Clair worked for the Firestone Tire Company and as a postal carrier delivering mail to the stars. In 1959, their daughter Cyndee was born in Burbank, California. From there, they moved to Idaho Falls, where he worked for the postal service and received many cards and gifts from his patrons for his great service. He had a handful of dog biscuits in his pocket every day for the friendly dogs he encountered on his way. Susan passed away in January 1986. On July 2, 1987, he married Shirley Gamble. In 1988, he retired from the postal service after 31 years of service. Clair was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, holding positions as Young Men's President, Ward Clerk and Membership Clerk. He was a diligent and faithful home teacher. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, daughters: Stephanie Pewtress (Lyle), Cyndee Denning, Adelaide Haines, and sons: Nick and Francis Crowne; his brother Jan Oler (Janice), sister-in-law, Connie, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Susan, parents, and brothers: Don, Keith, Larry, and Kirt Oler. His family would like to thank the Western Visiting Nurses and Hospice of Eastern Idaho for their gentle care during the final days of his life, and the loving and gentle care given by his wife, Shirley, who was by his side day and night. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 10, 2012, at the Parkwood LDS Ward, 395 2nd Street (corner of 2nd and Higbee), Idaho Falls, with Bishop Jeremy Westwood officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the church. Interment will be at the Shelley-Hillcrest Cemetery, with military rites performed by the Bonneville County Veterans Team and the Idaho Military Honor Guard.
