Obituary

Dan Gene Simkins, 74, of Ammon, Idaho, passed away Sunday, February 22, 2015, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born August 30, 1940, in Fairfield, Montana, the oldest son born to Thurland J. Simkins and Jean Elizabeth McCann Simkins. He grew up on a dairy farm and graduated from Fairfield High School in 1957. He obtained his bachelor's degree in Agriculture Business from BYU Provo. He served in the U.S. Army as Specialist 5 in Vietnam. On October 20, 1964, he married Vernett Houskeeper in the Cardston Alberta Canada Temple. Dan was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served faithfully in many positions including teacher, Bishop, Branch President, and as a counselor in two different stake presidencies. As a young man he served a mission to the Central States Mission with the mission headquarters in Independence, Missouri. He was called to manage the LDS Church ranch in Missoula, Montana. He managed the dairy and processing plant at the Montana State Prison in Deerlodge, Montana, and then McArthur's Dairy in Okeechobee, Florida. While living in Florida, he changed careers and went into banking. He began working for PCA in Clewiston, Florida. As a banker, he worked in Lewistown, Montana; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Missoula, Montana; and Cheyenne, Wyoming. In 1989, he moved to Idaho Falls and went to work for Valley Bank and later became the President of the Bank of Eastern Idaho. Following his retirement from the banking community, he became the owner of Frostline Financial Corporation. Dan was a loving, kind and humorous husband, father, and grandfather. He loved playing the trumpet, archery, camping and anything having to do with agriculture. He is survived by the following: his wife of 50 years, Vernett Simkins of Ammon, Idaho; Children: Dru (Krista) Simkins of Rexburg, Idaho; Melissa (Travis) Davies of Rigby, Idaho; Jared (Carrie) Simkins of Declo, Idaho; Danette (Michael) Mahana of Shelby, Montana; Jeanna (Jared) Hill of Iona, Idaho; and Natalie (Brian) Beard of Houston, Texas; a brother, Mark (Rene) Simkins of Ft. Shaw, Montana, sister-in-law, Diana Simkins of Ft. Shaw, Montana; 30 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Simkins. We appreciate the care and concern provided by Teton Home Health and Hospice. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 28, 2015, at the Ammon LDS 12th Ward Chapel, 2200 S. Stafford Dr. with Bishop Hollis Murri conducting. The family will visit with friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, February 27, 2015, at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First St., Idaho Falls, and Saturday one hour prior to the services at the church.
