He was born June 30, 1933, in Idaho Falls to Virgil Horton Leavitt and Eula Lynn Williams. He grew up and attended schools in Idaho Falls. He attended Idaho Falls High School and later earned his GED. He served with the Navy during the Korean War.
On Nov. 19, 1955, he married Susanna Wilkey in Nephi, Utah, and in 1964, their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They lived in Twin Falls for a short time before moving to Idaho Falls.
He was a fireman with the Idaho Falls Fire Department for 25 years. He was also a drywall contractor.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints having served as a stake missionary, Sunday School President, and in the High Priest Group Leadership.
He enjoyed woodworking, and art work, particularly painting. Darrell was a devoted husband and father who had a great love for the outdoors; he especially enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Susanna Wilkey Leavitt; son, DelLynn (Elida) Leavitt; daughter, Teresa (Rob) Bishop all of Idaho Falls; his daughter, Debra (Bryan) Webb of St. Louis, Missouri; his sister, Elaine (Raymond) Henken of Idaho Falls; his brother, Howard (Andrea, deceased) Leavitt of Idaho Falls; 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 4, 2006, at the Idaho Falls LDS 4th Ward Chapel, 955 Memorial Drive, with Bishop Kevin Hathaway officiating. The family will visit with friends one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in Fielding Memorial Cemetery.
