Obituary

Darwin Barnes, 94, of Idaho Falls, passed away Thursday, November 12, 2014 at Fairwinds Retirement Community. He was under the care of Hearts for Hospice for several months. He was born July 11, 1920 in Ucon, to Wilford Barnes and Pearl Groom Barnes, the oldest of six children. The family lived in Osgood and worked on a farm owned by the U & I Sugar Company. He attended Osgood Elementary School and Ammon High School. Following a farming accident that killed his father, he quit school to run the family farm. In 1941 he left the farm to serve a LDS mission in what was then called the Western States Mission. He served in Wyoming, Nebraska and New Mexico. In 1945 he married Myrtle Andrews in Bozeman Montana, with his future in-laws as witnesses. Their marriage was solemnized in 1952 at the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Darwin worked for the Sears Roebuck Company for 35 years. He worked as a commissioned salesman, department manager and shipping/receiving manager. His personality was perfectly suited for sales work because he truly enjoyed meeting new people. He often said that at one time or the other he met every person in the valley. That accounts for the vast number of people he called friends. Darwin's favorite activity was spending time at the family's summer cabin at Macks Inn, Idaho. He loved the Island Park country and was an avid fisherman, golfer and snowmobiler. Following his retirement he spent winters in St. George, Utah and Beaver Dam, Arizona, and summers at the cabin in Macks. In 2008 Darwin moved to Fairwinds Retirement Community, in Idaho Falls. Despite his apprehension he quickly made many new friends. Among those new friends was Blanche Miller. Their friendship grew and she became his constant companion and shared a very special love for each other. Survivors include his daughter, Kaye (husband, Roger) Littleford; a son Craig (wife, Stacey) Barnes; grandchildren, Stephanie (former husband, John) Brody; Jennifer (husband, Jim) Blair; Rebecca (husband, Jared) Finn, all of Idaho Falls; granddaughter Adrienne Barnes, San Diego; grandson Taylor Barnes, Boise, Idaho, and six great-grand children. Also survived by a sister, Leah (husband, Joe) Smith, Chandler, Az., a brother; Deb (wife, Beth) Barnes, Idaho Falls. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, two sisters and a brother. Funeral services will be held at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First Street, Idaho Falls, on Thursday, November 20, 2014, at 1:00 pm. The family will meet with friends Wednesday, November 19, 2014, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm at Coltrin Mortuary. The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to; Kelly Martin and her staff at Fairwinds Retirement Community for making the last six years of his life very enjoyable. We would also like to thank Dr. Shawn Speirs, Karla and Kerry and the caring staff of Hearts for Hospice, and Cloud Nine Home Care.
