David Russell Humpherys, 64, of Idaho Falls passed away December 31, 2009 at his home after a long battle with lymphoma. He was under the care of Hospice of Eastern Idaho. Dave was born in Ogden Utah November 20, 1945 to Max W and Ruth Sessions Humpherys. He moved to Idaho Falls as a small child, became an Eagle Scout at age 13, and graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 1964. He married Julie Westergard March 15, 1968 in the Idaho Falls Temple. He graduated from Utah State University the following May. He accepted a teaching position with University of Winnipeg where he taught for the next 13 years. During that time he also completed his education at University of Manitoba, earning a PhD in Neuro- Physiology. He was awarded a number of federal research grants for study of long-term effects upon the visual cortex and nervous system by hallucinogens and other street drugs. Dave and Julie's three children were born to them during this time. In 1981, the family moved to Idaho Falls when Dave changed careers by taking a position with Merrill Lynch as a commodities specialist. In 2002 he became a commodity advisor for AG Edwards/Wachovia where he was employed until his death. He was a definitive expert in his field for the last 28 years; his opinion and advice sought by many in Idaho and across the country. Most of his clients considered him to be a good friend as well as an advisor. Dave was a member of the LDS church and served in a number of positions including seminary teacher in Winnipeg and a bishop's councilor in Idaho Falls. He was a complex and much beloved man who has had a tremendous influence and impact on the lives of so many. A dear friend, a caring son and brother, a storyteller, a wise and knowledgeable teacher in many avenues of life, a loving husband, father and grandfather. In recent years he spent his free time studying mathematics and working in his large flower garden. He enjoyed traveling to his favorite natural wonders in the western states, especially the red rock country of Utah and Arizona. More than anything, he loved to spend time with his family. Dave is survived by his wife, Julie Humpherys of Idaho Falls; three children: Philip (Kimm) Humpherys of Draper UT, Jeffrey (Kristin) Humpherys of Provo UT, Janessa (Timothy) Pales of Springville UT, and grandchildren: Joshua, Max, Halle, Charlene, Karlee, Joseph and Aaron; his mother Ruth Humpherys and his sister Helen Humpherys both of Bountiful UT, and his brother Douglas Humpherys of Rochester NY. He was preceded in death by his father, Max W. Humpherys. Funeral services will by held Friday January 8th at 1pm at Sunnyside LDS Ward chapel 3721 Shadow Mountain Trail.
