Obituary

David Roger McComas passed peacefully, under the care of Brio Hospice, in the early morning hours of Tuesday, November 3, 2020, from complications related to COVID-19. David was born July 9, 1942, in Salt Lake City, Utah to David LeRoy Nathaniel McComas and Margaret Lucille Allison. He was the oldest child and only son.

David grew up in Rawlins, WY, Rock Springs, WY, Pocatello, ID, and Idaho Falls, ID. He graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 1961. In 1960, David joined the Army National Guard and joined the US Air Force in January 1963. David volunteered to go to Vietnam, but because he was the only son and last to carry on the McComas name, he was kept in the states where he proudly served his country at the Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota as a cook until January 1967.

In September 1963, David wrote a letter to his best friend's little sister, Karen Welker, and asked for her hand in marriage. He called her on Labor Day to get her answer and they were married on December 6, 1963, in Idaho Falls, Idaho having never dated! When his family learned of the impending marriage their response was "we didn't know he knew any girls well enough to get married!" They would have celebrated 57 years this December. February 28, 1976, David and Karen were sealed for time and all eternity in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.

David's pride and joy were his family, ever proud of his wife and children, and their accomplishments. Kerry Lyn and David Todd were both born in North Dakota on the Air Force Base, and Nichele Denise and Sean Edward were born in Idaho Falls. In 1973, Todd and Niki were taken from this earth, back to their Heavenly Father's care. David dearly missed them and was ready to wrap his arms around them both, in joyous reunion, on the other side of the veil!

When he returned from his military service, he worked for RT French Company for 2 seasons. He then worked for Intermountain Gas Company as a meter reader. During that time, he injured his back and was unable to return to that position. He later became a collection agent for them. In 1987, he was laid off from the gas company and found employment as a school bus driver with District 91, retiring from there after 26 years as a driver for the special needs' kids.

David was an avid reader, camper, fisherman, hunter, golfer, and bowler. He loved sci-fi books and movies. The Harry Potter Series was a favorite and was a regular appearance on the TV screen. He was a "trekkie", Star Wars, Game of Thrones, NCIS, Bones, and Dancing with the Stars fan, and sometimes he even had his eyes open when watching! He loved the Utah Jazz and always made sure he was home to watch their games.  During this year's "break" in the season he satisfied his withdrawals watching re-runs of old games!

David is survived by his loving sweetheart, Karen; his children: Kerry (Joe) Sacco and Sean (Kirsten) McComas; his sister, Margo Starnes; grandchildren: Joseph, Christopher, Nichelle, Samuel, and Emily Sacco and Joshua, David Todd, John, Gabby, and Jaidynn McComas and Rose Cloud; 9 great-grandchildren; best friend and brother in law, Larry (Sharon) Welker; brothers in law, Dennis Ellis and Paul (Nancy) Welker; sisters in law, Sheila Judkins and Lisa (Mike) Sutton; and honorary brother and sister, Gary L. and Pamela Ferrin; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 14, 2020, at the Idaho Falls Stake Center, 1155 E. First Street, Idaho Falls. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services. Interment will be at Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First Street, Idaho Falls.
