David Kent Smart, 36, of Idaho Falls, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at Eastern Idaho Medical Center of natural causes.

David was born on November 11, 1988, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Melissa Smart. He grew up in Idaho Falls, where he attended Hillcrest High School.

He married Lauren Hawkins, and they later divorced. He married Amber Schieffer. He was the proud father of two boys, Preston and Jackson, and a daughter, Madilyn. David worked as a carpet installer.

David's most enjoyable moments were the times he spent with his sons and the quality time he spent with his loved ones. He was nice when he wanted to be, and a good, loving man, father, son, brother, and friend.

David's passing has left an enormous void for his two sons, Preston and Jackson. After being given a short time to live, the family was not prepared for this sudden loss, especially given the financial burden that comes with it. Without life insurance, the expenses for a proper funeral are now a significant challenge.

This is where we can come together to support them in their time of need. Every contribution, no matter how small, will help ease the financial strain and provide Preston and Jackson with the chance to say goodbye to their father with dignity. He is survived by his mother, Melissa Smart Nelson; his sons, Preston Smart and Jackson Smart; his brothers, Chanse Wellard and Brendin Martindale; his sister, Ashley (Brian) Allen; his grandparents, Kent and Marge Peterson; his grandparents, Brad and Sherry Wellard all of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and his daughter, Madilyn Daniels of Salmon, Idaho.

He was preceded in death by his dad, Matt Wellard; his grandpa, Gilfred Smart Jr.; his great-grandparents, Gilfred and Norma Smart; great-grandparents, Herbert and Edith Gleave; his uncle, Brian Smart; and his brother, Trevor Hawkins.

Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at Ammon Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 1-3:00 p.m., prior to services at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First Street, Idaho Falls. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.coltrinmortuary.com .
