Obituary

Dawna Lucille Clark Jenkins, 95, returned to her heavenly home on May 15, 2022. She was the first-born child of Gertrude and LaVar Clark. Lucille was born on February 25, 1927, in Iona, Idaho. She was born in the home that her Grandmother and Grandfather Steele had built and raised their family in.  Lucille's mother, Gertrude, was also born in this same house. Grandmother Steele lived with them until her death when Lucille was 18 years old. Lucille's Grandfather Steele came to Utah with the Martin Handcart Company as a two-year-old child.

Lucille had one sister, Patricia Denning, and two brothers, Glenn Clark and Dick Clark. All of whom proceeded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her husband Jim; their youngest child, William Kit Jenkins; and one grandchild, Riley Ball.

Lucille attended and graduated from the Iona schools. As a child, she was close to all her cousins who spent their summer days at Bone, Idaho riding their horses, fishing, and swimming at Willow Creek. Almost everyone in Iona was her Uncles, Aunts, cousins, or kin so she always had someone to get in trouble with. Iris, Fern, and Lucille were always together as they attended school, rode their horses, and participated in school plays. Lucille often talked about working at Hillfield Air Force base during WWII. She worked hard and had many friends there.

On December 31, 1947, she married James Floyd Jenkins Jr. They always celebrated their anniversary on January first. Due to the timeline, it was still December in Nevada, where they were married, but at home, in Idaho, it was the first of January. Lucille and Jim loved their horses and competed in the rodeos. Lucille was War Bonnet Queen in 1947 and Jim competed in everything but bull riding. They had beautiful horses and rode with the Idaho Falls mounted posse.

Lucille and Jim had four children. Dawna Suzann Betts (Frank), Jacqulyn Ilean Naef (Douglas), James Neal Jenkins(Brenda), and William Kit Jenkins(Cathy). Lucille has 18 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren with one more on the way. Lucille loved and enjoyed her grandchildren. Christmas was filled with joy as she would buy more toys for the grandkids than their parents did. There were always new dresses from grandma for birthdays and Easter. Lucille wrote often in her Journal about each of her grandchildren what they were doing, and her love and appreciation for them. Lucille and Jim were always generous and loved to always find a special family to surprise at Christmas. This became a special part of the family Christmas tradition and was the highlight of Christmas Eve as the family laughed and tripped over each other trying to get away without being caught after the gifts were placed and one of the boys loudly knocked on the door.

On June 23, 1984, Lucille and Jim were endowed in the Idaho Falls Temple. With great joy, 70 loved ones and friends gathered as President Harris, who had just been called as a general authority, sealed Lucille and Jim to their children, and then Lucille sealed to her parents. All four of their children had married in the temple so their sealings completed our family forever. Afterward, about 150 people gathered at the ward building to express their love and congregation. As a ripple effect of their activation, six others followed them into activation and attended the temple with them. Lucille taught Primary and young women. She especially loved her time doing Spanish extraction. They loved the people of the 34 th ward and had many wonderful friends that kept them busy with church callings.

Lucille spent her life loving her children and grandchildren, her Aspen trees, and flower beds. Many happy hours were spent on horseback with Jim and their friends riding to check and gather cattle. She loved the baby calves, and her garage was often filled with them when they were born on cold winter nights.  Jim would bring in a little one half-frozen and fill the tub with warm water to save them as Lucille ran about getting the things he asks for and using all her clean towels. She would cuss him out about all the washing and scrubbing she had to do to get towels and tub clean again and turn right around and run to the garage to make sure the little thing had warm milk in its belly.
