Obituary

Dee David Whittier, 57, of Idaho Falls, died March 1, 2015 at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center due to complications from a heart attack. Dee was born February 8, 1958 in Pocatello, Idaho, to Homer Dee and Ora Stoker Whittier. The family lived in several Southeastern Idaho locations before settling in Idaho Falls when he was eight years old. He graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 1976. He attended Ricks College for one semester before he was called to serve as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served a 2-year mission in the Spain Seville mission where he taught the gospel in the Spanish language. His mission was a very special memory to him, and throughout his life he continued relationships with many of the people he served in Spain. Dee graduated from BYU in 1982 with a BS in Business. On June 8, 1983, he married his sweetheart, Amy Swackenberg, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They soon welcomed seven children into their family. The family lived in Colorado and Utah for a time as he began his career as a financial planner, and then settled in Idaho Falls where he took over his father's insurance and financial planning business, Whittier and Associates. He continued to work as a self-employed financial planner for the remainder of his career. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served as Elders Quorum president, Young Men's president, Scout leader, and Bishopric counselor. He and Amy also served as missionaries in the Idaho Falls South Stake 17th (Spanish) Branch. He touched many, many lives in his service in the Church and truly loved serving others in all capacities. He was very active in his community. In 2013 he was elected to the Idaho Falls City Council and enjoyed his time serving in public office. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hiking, following BYU sports, traveling, and making travel plans for others. He loved music; he played the baritone in his high school pep band and served as pep band president. He also played the piano and loved listening to all types of music. Above all, Dee was a family man. He was a loving, devoted husband, father and grandfather. He spent years coaching sports teams, attending recitals, taking his kids on camping trips, and was never too old to get on the floor and play with his children and grandchildren. He loved his family and was especially proud of their achievements in academics, sports, music, and activity in the LDS Church. He was a good friend and was beloved by all who knew him. Survivors include his wife, Amy Whittier of Idaho Falls; children, Tonya (Collin) Robertson of Twin Falls, Sam (Megan) Whittier of Franklin, Tennessee, Tara (Paul) Siddoway of Ogden, Utah, Cory (Hayley) Whittier of Idaho Falls, Alex Whittier of Provo, Utah, Jodee Whittier, currently serving a mission in San Antonio, Texas, and Andrea Whittier of Idaho Falls; 7 grandchildren; mother, Ora Stoker Whittier of Idaho Falls; siblings, Melanie Reynolds of Logan, Utah, Jamee (Kerry) Cooper of Idaho Falls, Dawn (Brad) Doman of Idaho Falls, Raymond (Denise) Whittier of Enoch, Utah, and Elise (John) Church of Idaho Falls.
