Obituary

Dennis "Denny" Lynn Hall, 76, of Ammon passed away August 8, 2012, at his home following a long battle with cancer. ] Dennis was born December 30, 1935 to Darius Lee Hall and Meryl Kroll Hall in Idaho Falls, Idaho. When he was 6 months old, he was diagnosed with Glaucoma which eventually caused blindness. He attended schools for the Blind in Gooding, Idaho; Vancouver, Washington; Muskogee, Oklahoma; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Ogden, Utah. He graduated from Gooding in 1954. He attended Boise State and Ricks College where he majored in Radio communication. Dennis worked at Crookham Seed Co. in Caldwell from 1956-1957. It was seasonal work where he bagged popcorn in 100 lb. bags. He hung around KID Radio Station until they decided to hire him. He worked in production, and co-hosted a radio show with Tom Jackson on Saturday nights, the Tom and Denny Show from 1959-1967. They would play songs from the 30's and 40's. While at KID, Denny's boss, Mel Richardson, introduced him to Elaine Elkington on a blind date. Denny says, Boy, was it ever blind." Through this introduction and time, Denny married Elaine in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on March 11, 1967. They moved to St. Anthony where he took a job at KIGO Radio as the Chief Engineer. He also was a board operator in the morning and occasionally in the afternoon. Dennis moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, to be a computer programmer in 1969. he was there with his family for nine months learning how to program the IBM 360 using punch cards. He worked at Hill Air Force Base in Clearfield, Utah, from 1970-1976. While at Hill Air Force Base, he would buy pallets of washing machines that needed repair. He would repair them and then resale them. He enjoyed working with his hands. He repaired many a neighbor's washing machine, stove, refrigerator, TV, etc. Still wanting to get back into radio, Denny applied and received a position at KUSU FM, at Utah State University. 1976-1988. Dennis worked in production, recording programs, news, and board shifts. He also would do on site recordings and live productions at the University and at Logan City Council meetings. Dennis and his family lived in Millville, Utah, a small community south of Providence, Utah. Utah State Library for the Blind and Disabled needed someone who had radio experience to work on their side bank radio reading service, a closed circuit for Blind and Disabled, programming, reading newspapers, magazines, books, etc. also someone who could read Braille. The station had volunteers come in and record the papers and other reading materials. Dennis would also read the Radio Dial from the Deseret News. He and Bob Wall would produce this information, playing the programs over the air. Denny loved the radio scene and enjoyed the people he worked with through the years. He worked at the Utah State Library for the Blind and Disabled from July 1988 until his retirement in 2005. He lived in the Rose Park area of Salt Lake City. The family moved to Ammon, Idaho, in 2009. He is survived by his devoted wife, Elaine; 2 daughters: Terri (Thomas) Moon of Pasco, Washington, and Ginger (David) Wagstaff of Kunda, Idaho; 8 grandchildren, fosters daughters: Nellie Bernellie and Janice Watchman Martinez.; a brother: Darwin (Nina) Kroll, a brother, Ray Lamont Hall and a sister, Carol Hall, who were later adopted by his aunt and uncle, Earl and Ann Hall; sisters: Starla (Bob) Schoelkopf of Graeagle, Nevada; Taunda Riecke of Idaho Falls; and a brother, Lexie Hall of Las Vegas, Nevada; step-brothers: Wesley Guymon of Ririe, Idaho, and Mack (Rhonda) Guymon of Richmond, Utah; step-sisters: Janet Farnworth of Idaho Falls; Grace (Craig) Winn of Salt Lake City; Trudy (Jim) Hess of Richmond, Utah; Linda (James) Lovell of Ririe, Idaho, and a sister-in-law, Alease Guymon of Sandy, Utah. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, Doloris Hall, and a step-brother, Delroy Guymon. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 13, 2012, at the Ammon LDS 10th Ward Chapel, 4375 E. Sunnyside Rd., with Bishop Wes Wood officiating. The family will visit with friends Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. August 12, 2012, at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First St., Idaho Falls and on Monday one hour prior to the services at the church.
