Dess Stoddard Lauder, 97, of Idaho Falls, passed away January 30, 2015 at Pine Brook Assisted Living, while under the care of Hands of Hope Hospice. Dess was born April 20, 1917, in Rexburg, Idaho to William Stuart Stoddard and Anna Laura Bowers. Her early years were spent in Island Park at the family sawmill. Dess and her cousins would catch the train at Trude Siding, for school in West Yellowstone, Montana. Once the snow became too deep they would move to Rexburg for the rest of the winter. Summers were spent riding horses up Sawtelle and visiting sheep camps. Dess helped the family by carrying water, stocking the wood box, and tending to her younger brothers. In the summer of 1937 she met Russell Ray Lauder during a dance at Pond's Lodge. They were married on August 9th in Butte, Montana. Early years of their married life were spent following Russ's construction jobs. They eventually settled in Sugar City where their three children attended school. Dess and Russ's home was always open, much like a bed and breakfast in today's terms. They helped many young families as they were starting their own lives. Dess and Russ later moved to Wyoming, and then to Fernley, Nevada where Russ passed away November 9, 1978. Dess returned to Idaho Falls to be closer to family and spent the last 20 years in Blackfoot, Idaho. She and Russ had a love for horses and were original members of the Snake River Horse Show Association and the Upper Valley Wranglers of Rexburg. They raised American Saddlebred horses and enjoyed showing them. Dess enjoyed quilting, knitting, and watching the Utah Jazz. She made 960 pairs of children's slippers for the Humanitarian Center for the LDS Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Russell Ray Lauder; parents, Bill and Laura Stoddard; two brothers, Billy (Alice) and Ted "Hooks" (Dorma); sister, Juddy Sue Virgin Stone (Delwin and Roland Stone). She is survived by her daughter, Laurie Ann Lusk (Farrell) of Idaho Falls; two sons, Jeff (Georgia) of Sedro-Woolley, Washington, Scott of Blackfoot, Idaho; 7 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at the Teton Cemetery in Teton, Idaho. Family will visit with friends from 6-8:00 p.m. on Monday, February 2, 2015 at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First St. Idaho Falls. Condolences may be sent online at www.coltrinmortuary.com
