IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dolores 'Mace'
Smith
October 18, 1929 – January 19, 2017
Dolores Marie "Mace" Macioce Smith was born in Detroit, Michigan, on October 18, 1929, to Victor and Anna Rande Macioce. Dolores was raised in Columbus, Ohio, where she attended St. Mary's Catholic School. She remained a life time sport fan especially supporting Ohio State and Michigan. At the age of 18, Dolores decided she was not going to settle down and marry some nice Italian boy but instead joined the military to pursue a career in nursing. The Army sent her to the U. S. Military Hospital in Landstuhl, Germany, where she met and married Jay T. Smith in 1952. Their commanding officers sent them to Austria and Switzerland for their honeymoon, where between the army and the wonderful people they met, it didn't cost them a dime.
After their tour in the military was over, Mace and J.T. came home to Idaho. Iona was home for many years where Mace was a homemaker, raising five children. She was very supportive of her husband and her children in their activities, sports and rodeo. She was a Den Mother, a member of the Bonneville Booster Club, and a member of the Iona Posse Ladies Auxiliary. While living in Iona, Mace worked at the Iona grocery story and at the Ucon School lunch program. Many kids remember her making them eat all their peas. She always had a houseful of kids and the Grandkids loved to stop by with their friends for "lunch at Grandma's" when they lived on First Street. At age 40 Mace went back to school to get her LPN degree and worked at the Sacred Heart Hospital, Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center and the Teton Surgical Center. Mace was a devout life-long member of the Catholic Church and attended Christ the King Church.
Mace died on January 19, 2017, after a long illness. She is survived by her children: James Victor "Skitter" Smith, Mariann Smith Schiewe, and Lynn Robert Smith (Sophia); her grandchildren: Jake, Jade, B.J., Lynnzie, Casey, Kelsey, Chad and Chance; and 6 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 57 years, J. T., sons Vance Jay "Boe" Smith, Jay T. Smith, Jr., great granddaughter, Jayden Schiewe, and a sister Lucille.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 23, 2017, at Christ the King, corner of 17th and Woodruff.
