IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Don Raymond
Powell
September 19, 1945 – May 30, 2023
Don Raymond Powell, 77, of Idaho Falls, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at his home.
Don was born on September 19, 1945, in Idaho Falls, Idaho to James Raymond and Agnes Pearl Terry Powell. He was born prematurely and sent home in a shoe box at just over 2 pounds. His chances of living were slim in 1945, but he was a survivor. Don grew up on a small farm in Sugar City and was the youngest of 13 children. The beloved baby of the family. He attended high school at Sugar Salem but graduated from Madison High School in 1963.
On September 25, 1981, he married his sweetheart, Edith Eyvone Harrison, in the Methodist Church in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Previously, he was married to Helen Faye Shaffer in 1965 and they later divorced in 1970. They lived in a small house in Ucon and had 2 children, Danette and Kendall. After they divorced, he moved back to Rexburg. He was introduced to Edith, and they eventually married and settled in Idaho Falls. They bought their first and only home in 1982 and had 2 daughters, Jody and Kim.
He worked at Petrolane Propane Company, where he set propane tanks and installed gas lines. Suburban Propane later bought Petrolane and Don continued working for them. In 1989, he decided to start his own business, Don's Heating and Repair, working as a subcontractor for several companies including Rocky Mountain Supply, installing gas fireplaces and gas lines. He was, to say the least, a pro in his field. He retired in 2008 at the age of 62.
Don had many talents and interests. He was an amazing artist who loved to paint and draw in his spare time. He was always up for an adventure and loved all outdoor activities including camping, fishing, boating, etc. One of his favorite hobbies was 4-wheeling with his best friend, Tom Zollinger, and was a member of the Idaho Falls ATV Club. Gardening and yard work made him so happy. He was so proud of his lawn. Other hobbies included coin collecting and restoring his 1975 Corvette.
Don was always on the go, even in his last days. Patience was not one of his strengths, but he could never be accused of being lazy. If he said he would do something, he did it. If someone needed help, he was there. He had a great sense of humor and told the worst dad jokes. Don's legacy was his family. He was so proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Edith Powell of Idaho Falls, Idaho; his daughter, Danette (Tom) Mullen of Concord, California; his son, Kendall Powell of Idaho Falls, Idaho; his daughter, Jody (Tyler) Hansen of Rigby, Idaho; his daughter, Kim (Jed) Sion of Pocatello, Idaho; his sister, Shirley Lewis of Idaho Falls, Idaho; his brothers: Leon (Phyllis) Powell of Moore, Idaho and Lavar (Rebecca) Powell of Rexburg, Idaho; 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents: James Raymond and Agnes Pearl Powell; his brothers: Rulon Powell, Wendell Powell, Gerald Powell, Seth Powell, and Thon Powell; and his sisters: Verla Powell, Eloise Muir, Evelyn Parkinson, Phyllis Dreiling.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., June 24, 2023, at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First Street, Idaho Falls. The family will visit with friends one hour prior to services. Don's ashes will be spread by the family the following day after a final ATV ride to Kilgore. Online condolences may be sent to www.coltrinmortuary.com.
