Obituary

Donald Gordon Blakeman, 75, of Idaho Falls, ID passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2015. Don was born on April 24, 1939 in Kansasville, WI the son of Gordon and June Blakeman. He married Kay Enge on May 29, 1959 at her parents' home in New Berlin, Wisconsin. In 1966, Don heard the "Call of the West" and after visiting decided to move with his family to Idaho. Don was an active man and started his hard work ethic at American Motors assembly plant in Wisconsin, while sanding floors as a side job. After he moved west he was hired at INEL as a computer programmer which he did until he retired. During this time he built three houses to supplement his earnings and enjoyed the pursuit of his outdoor hobbies. After retirement, he repaired computers, enjoyed the outdoors, helped to raise his grandchildren, visited relatives, and traveled. He loved the mountains of the west and in the early years cruised down a gravel road in a '64 Chevy Pickup with his family and a camper he made out of plywood to go camping, hiking, boating, fishing, hunting or searching for the coveted morel mushroom in the spring. It was Idaho of a different time and he would take relish in saying "if there is another camper in this valley, it is too crowded, and we should move to the next one!" He upgraded the camper and boats through the years. Many experiences were shared with family and friends. One memorable time, retold much, Don and his friend Robert Wadkins were goat hunting and had to cross the Salmon River in a rapidly sinking raft paddling furiously with a board and broom. He was rarely seen out in the woods without his trusty 44 on one side and his "bear stabber" on the other. He experienced many adventures and instilled a love of the outdoors in his children and grandchildren. A religious man, he strongly believed being a Christian was about having a loving and forgiving spirit. He had an open home to family and friends alike and many people enjoyed his hospitality. He helped others and was always willing to go the extra mile. Don is survived in death by his wife, Kay Blakeman, children; Wayne Blakeman and Brenda Kay Walther; sisters Betty Yung, Nancy Erickson, Sally Smith, brother's Robert Blakeman, Kenney Blakeman, Jon Blakeman, Tom Blakeman and his step-mother Alice Blakeman. He has 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Gordon and June Blakeman. He will be missed. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday 21, 2015 at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First Street, Idaho Falls, ID, 83401. The viewing with family and friends will be held from 1 p.m. To 2 p.m. prior to services at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to office@coltrinmortuary.com.
