Obituary

Donald Leonard Harris, 70, passed away on November 5, 2017, following a brief illness.

He was born to Leonard and Margaret Harris and grew up in El Cerrito, California. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Western States Mission from 1969 to 1971.

In December 1971, he married the love of his life, Joyce Ann Hicken, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were blessed with six wonderful children. He graduated in 1973 with a political science degree from the University of California at Berkeley. He earned his law degree at the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University as a member of the charter class of 1976.

Donald worked as a grocery clerk at Safeway to support himself and his growing family during his schooling. After his graduation from law school, he took a substantial pay cut to work for the Attorney General's office for the State of Idaho in Boise. Following his time there, he worked for four years for the U.S. Justice Department as a federal prosecutor in Boise. He then moved his family to Eastern Idaho, where he joined the firm of Holden, Kidwell, Hahn and Crapo and became a partner. He retired in December 2013.  He made notable contributions to his profession. He served as chair and president of the Litigation Section of the Idaho State Bar. He represented pro bono Guardians ad Litem in cases for CASA for abused and neglected children.

He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully throughout his life, always doing whatever was asked of him, and blessing the lives of many people. He especially enjoyed serving a mission with his sweetheart in the California San Diego Mission for 23 months after retiring. Prior to their mission, he served as bishop of the Kearney 3rd Ward. He was serving as an ordinance worker at the Idaho Falls Temple at the time of his death.

He enjoyed meeting new people and inviting new neighbors to his home for ice cream. He is remembered for his kindness to all. He loved being with his family and had a special love for his grandchildren. He loved gardening. He loved reading, particularly about history.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce; his children: Leonard Harris of Roseville, CA, Lisa (Doug) Anderson of Honolulu, HI, Nathan (EvEllen) Harris of Rexburg, ID, Kate (Matt) Harrison of Layton, UT, Ann (Jonathan) Swinton of Sandy, UT, and Catherine (Jamie) Smith of Payson, UT; his sister, Cherie (Richard) Faulconer of Sacramento, CA; and 23 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his half-brother, Alvin Taylor.
