Obituary

Douglas W. Mander, 90, of Idaho Falls, died October 26, 2006, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center of natural causes.

He was born March 14, 1916, in Garfield, Utah, the youngest of three children to William A. Mander and Katherine Lee Mander. He was adored by his two big sisters. He grew up in the Kennecott Company town of Garfield, Utah, and graduated in 1936 from Cyprus High School. At the age of seventeen, he was trained through the Red Cross in life saving and at the time, he became the youngest Red Cross Life Saving Supervisor in the United States.

In 1932, Doug served in the Civilian Conservation Corp, working in Utah at Zions and Bryce Canyon National Parks.

In June 1939, he married Florence Baker in Salt Lake City, Utah.

He taught refrigeration classes at Utah State University in 1946 and then in the 50's and 60's he worked at sales and installation of refrigeration equipment.

Doug and Florence were camping and fishing on the Madison River in 1959 when the 7.8 Hebgen Lake earthquake occurred. Doug was so familiar with the area that he was able to lead a large group of survivors to higher ground above the dam. Doug and Florence pulled people from the river and nursed the injured until the smoke jumpers, a road construction crew, and the Salvation army came to their rescue.

The Manders ran Doug's Dairyland Kitchen in Idaho Falls from 1963-1981, serving great food in congenial company.

Cutting and faceting gems were his favorite past times and he taught gem cutting and refrigeration classes at Eastern Idaho Technical College in Idaho Falls.

He believed in doing things well, and was both creative and a very good craftsman. He loved to learn. Throughout his lifetime besides his family and friends, he loved the outdoors, dogs, rocks, interesting people, and story telling.

He is survived by the following: 2 daughters; Sybil (Paolo) Scianna of St. George, UT, and Jackie (Mike) Brower of Idaho Falls; one sister, Dorthy Kimball of Salt Lake City, UT, 3 grandsons; Graig (Shellee) of St. George, UT; Garet (Rachel) Griffin of Brisbane, Australia; and Joel (Joanna) Brower of Beaverton, OR, and 4 great-grandchildren: Matthew and Andrew Griffin; Elliott Taylor, and Audrey Brower.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Florence in 1996, and his sister, Lelia Anderson.
