Doyle was born on January 25, 1937, in Paradise, Utah to Henry Richman Howells and Zella Shipley Summers Howells. He spent his childhood hunting, fishing, and trapping with his dad around Little Bear River. He graduated from South Cache High School in 1955. After high school, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Education with a minor in Arts and Crafts from Utah State University. He often spoke fondly of Cache Valley and the time he spent at Utah State.

Doyle taught History and Arts and Crafts at the junior high and high school level. His love of horses led him to pursue a career as a farrier, which he was dedicated to for the rest of his life.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His hobbies included hunting, camping, leather work, horses, and raising purebred dogs. He enjoyed spending time with his family and being a grandfather. Many mornings were passed with a warm drink and conversation with friends.
