IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Eileen Agnes
Mittag-Stevenson
February 19, 1948 – March 9, 2024
Eileen Agnes Mittag-Stevenson, 76, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, passed away on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at the home of her son Benjamin, after a lifelong battle with illness. She will be truly missed as the cornerstone of her family.
Eileen was born on February 19, 1948, in Astoria, New York City to Robert Stevenson and Agnes Miller Stuart. She married George Mittag in the Washington DC Temple, and they later divorced. Eileen lived in the New York City Housing Projects for most of her life before she could afford to buy a house in South Ozone Park later in life; Providing a real home with green grass instead of concrete and brick was a dream she was so proud to have accomplished for her children.
She worked at the Social Security Administration for fifteen years while she was a single mom, successfully raising three children. Her children were her special mission in life, and she did all she could to fulfill that mission. When she retired, she moved west to Salt Lake City to live near her children and finally to Idaho Falls.
Eileen joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, at the age of seventeen years old after finding the gospel at The Mormon Pavilion at the 1964–65 New York World's Fair. She was the first member of the Woodside, New York Branch before it became part of the Rego Park Stake. She attended Church in the Manhattan multipurpose/multi-stake center built in 1976, before it was converted to the Manhattan LDS Temple, and fondly remembers taking her children to the Visitors Center there regularly and showing her children the replica Golden plates in the lobby. She served happily in every calling she was asked to serve in. She had many callings that included teaching every age in primary, teaching Relief Society, and being a faithful Visiting Teacher. She enjoyed teaching Gospel Doctrine and being a counselor to the Relief Society President. When her children, Ben and Annie, served their individual missions, she became "Mother Stevenson" to missionaries in Richmond Hill, Queens, New York. In later years she loved temple work and ministering in finding the lost sheep and inviting them in.
Her favorite sayings were: "You have not because you ask not", "Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, Knock and it shall be opened" and also: "ASK!! All, they can say is no!" Many people tried to put limits on her life, but she wouldn't let them. She wants you to know: "Set your own goals and don't let others tell you that you can't do it," and "must do = can do."
She is survived by her Family members: Benjamin her Eldest Son and his wife Shalaee Mittag and their daughter (her only grandchild) Naomi Mittag, and Annmarie Mittag, Eileen's Daughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Agnes Stuart Stevenson; and her youngest son, Nathanael Mittag.
