IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ellen
Jorgensen
March 23, 1932 – April 13, 2022
Ellen Mae Ruth Price Jorgensen was born on March 23, 1932 in Rigby, Idaho to Mark Price and Verna Clegg. She was the oldest of ten children: Margaret, Bud, Mary, JoEtta, Lea, Sharon, Lyman, Faye and Dallas.
Ellen started school at five in a three-room school house with a pot-bellied stove that served as both a heat source and a place to cook lunch. She had fond memories of the delicious aromas of soup and hot chocolate wafting through the air as she studied. Because she was the only first grader she got to ring the bell.
As she was growing up, her family frequently visited her grandmother in Idaho Falls. Ellen has sweet memories of her grandmother smelling like lavender, and throughout Ellen's life those sweet memories came through in Ellen's choice of soap, bedding, clothes, and pillows.
After her family moved to their farm, she started school in Rigby. She had to walk three miles to get there. In Righy, she learned about art and her interest sparked a lifelong passion.
She loved going to movies in the winter because they had to go by horse drawn sleigh. At the end of the movie they would come out to a clear cold night. She remembered peeking out from under quilts and seeing the frost on her Dad's face and the horse's breath as the sleigh bells rang.
During her junior year of high school she started dating Derald Jorgensen. On Thanksgiving Day, Derald walked from Idaho Falls to Rigby to give Ellen an engagement ring. On January 29, 1949, Derald and Ellen got married during one of the worst snow storms of the century. Their reception had to be held three months later after the snow quit and the roads were plowed. They were sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple in 2001. They had five children: Susan, Debbie, Terry, Lorna and Kim.
From an early age Ellen wanted to be a nurse. Although it took many years, she realized her dream later in life. She first volunteered with the Rigby Quick Response Team. In 1980, she started working at Riverview Hospital as a technician. In 1983, she started studying at Vo Tech and got her LPN a year later. She worked part-time at Riverview Hospital and also part-time at a doctors' practice. The doctors encouraged her to go back to school and become a registered nurse. She went to school in the morning and worked in the evening. She graduated from Rick's College in 1992. Ellen's patriarchael blessing stated that she would be an instrument in the hands of the Lord in helping to care for the sick and afficted. And that is what she did.
Later in life, she and Derald started travelling. Her favorite trip was to Jerusalem and she always wanted to return.
Ellen was active in Epsione Sigma Alpha (ESA) Sorority. Its purpose was to learn, grow and serve. She was president from 2007-2008 and raised money for St. Jude's Hospital. She started pursuing her love of art by joining the Valley Art Guild. She brought Art Kerner to Idaho Falls to teach art classes and learned techniques of landscape painting. She painted many landscapes of Idaho that adorned her family and friends' homes. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. Ellen served in many callings for her church, including Relief Society President.
She is survived by her children, Susan (Fred), Debbie, Terry (Marlene), and Lorna (Paul), as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her husband, Derald and son, Kim preceded her in death.
