Everett Hyrum Crook, 96, of Idaho Falls, passed away Monday, Oct. 31, 2011, at Homestead assisted Living in Rexburg, Idaho. Everett was born on Oct. 1, 1915, in Smoot, Wyoming, to Stella Bruce and Hyrum Crook. He grew up in Etna, Wyoming, where he attended schools until the family moved to Idaho Falls where he attended high school. He married Dot Thornock on May 28, 1939, and left after the wedding to Green River, Wyoming, where Everett worked at a bakery. They moved to Pocatello about a year later where they lived until they moved to Los Angeles for Everett to try to go to a ship builder's school. While waiting to get into school, he again worked at a bakery. On his birthday, Oct. 1, 1942, he took the oath for the Navy as a 3rd class petty officer, and was sent to Farragaut, Idaho, for boot camp. The following spring he was sent out in the Pacific on an aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Barnes, with San Diego being his home base. After three years on the carrier in the South Pacific such as Pearl Harbor, Nowmea, Brisbane, Australia, and six other islands including Japan, he was discharged on his birthday, Oct. 1, 1945. They continued living in the San Diego area after the war settling in LaMesa, California. He worked for a bakery for a short time, then went to work for Testing Engineers, a company that was testing soil and concrete. He worked there for 27 years until he retired in 1976. After retiring they moved to Rogue River, Oregon, where he enjoyed fishing for steelhead. Missing home, they moved back to Idaho Falls after a few years. Everett was a member of the L.D.S. church, and enjoyed camping, fishing and gardening. Survivors are his daughter, Janice Powers, of Ramona, California, four grandchildren, Vanessa (Mike) Brown of Chula Vista, CA., John William Powers and Brian Patrick Powers of San Diego, CA., and Kelly Powers of San Francisco, CA.. He is also survived by four sisters, Betty Lou Maraffio, of Challis, Idaho, Ruth Butler, of Pocatello, Idaho, Maxine (Bill) Sager of Salmon, Idaho, and Patsy Winterton of Kent, Washington. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Dot, who passed away on August 4, 2011, after 72 years of marriage. A daughter, Karen Waymire, brothers James Orson Crook, Blaine Bruce Crook, and Sisters, Verda Walker, Nora Hutchison, and Freda White. Funeral Service will be held a 1 p.m. Monday Nov 7, at the Idaho Falls LDS North Stake Center, 944 Memorial Dr., with Bishop Greg Poulter officiating.
