IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Floriene Brown
Oakey
May 28, 1934 – July 12, 2018
On July 12, 2018 heaven gained a beautiful angel. Floriene Brown Oakey was born May 28, 1934, in Rexburg, Idaho, to Theodore Reading and Florence Knight Brown. When she was two weeks old, she was taken home to Alta, Wyoming, and it was there that she spent her early childhood, helping on the farm.
She attended school in Alta and Sugar City, Idaho, graduating from Sugar Salem high school in 1952. She spent winters in Sugar City and summers on the ranch in Alta. While attending school in Sugar, she met the love of her life, Gary G. Oakey.
On February 19, 1953 they were married in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They made their first home in Plano, Idaho, where Gary worked on a potato farm. Their first child, Gaylene, was born while living there.
In the fall of 1954, they moved to Idaho Falls and rented a home on Jefferson Street, by the temple. Here they welcomed their second and third daughters, Colette and Marcene. During the summer of 1957, they built a home on Santalema Drive on the east side of Idaho Falls.
In October 1959, their fourth daughter, Lynette was born, and two years later, their first son and last child, Kendel Gary was born.
In 1974, they moved to a home on Oak Trail, also, in Idaho Falls, where she resided until recently moving to Morningstar Senior Living Center.
She was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many of the organizations, including Primary and Young Women's, but loved serving in Relief Society. She enjoyed and excelled in every part of homemaking, was an excellent seamstress, cook, and baker.
She found ways to bring in small amounts of income to the home without taking time away from her family. Her cake decorating skills made her in high demand for wedding cakes throughout Southeast Idaho. She also sold memberships to Aunt Mary's Photo Club over the phone. She was an Election Registrar for Idaho Falls 26 th Precinct for many years.
Thirty years ago, in January of 1988, Gary passed away. After his death, she continued working as a Title 1 Reading Tutor for School District #91. From 1999 to 2001 she served an LDS mission in Nauvoo, Illinois, greeting visitors to the LDS historical sites. Following her mission, she worked at Eastgate Drug, then Walgreens Drug, until 2 weeks before her death.
She is survived by her children: Gaylene (Stephen) Spataro, Colette (Lynn) Jorgensen, Marcene Romrell, Lynette (Kyle, deceased) Denning, and Kendel (Amy) Oakey; by her sister, Wylene (Hans, deceased) Jensen; her brother, Therol (Marilyn) Brown; 22 grandchildren and 31 great–grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gary, her parents, a sister and a brother, a son-in-law, and a great-grandson.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 20, 2018, at the Parley Ward building, 2055 Coronado Street in Idaho Falls.
