Garna Mae Hix Mickelsen, 63, passed away at her home May 26, 2010, of natural causes. Garna was born December 29, 1946, in Rigby, Idaho, to Milburn and Verla Hix. She was raised near Coltman and attended Bonneville High School where she was actively involved in school activities and served a term as President of the Honey Bees. She attended Ricks College and soon thereafter worked at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory as an administrative assistant for a short period of time. On January 27, 1967, Garna married Dale Lloyd Mickelsen in the Idaho Falls Temple. With the exception of a brief period living in Houston, Texas (1970-1975), Garna called Idaho Falls home. As an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Garna served in a variety of capacities including President of the Young Women, Relief Society, and Primary, Gospel Doctrine Instructor, Girls Camp Director, and many other areas which all brought deep fulfillment to her life and the lives of those she served. She was serving at BYU Idaho with her husband who is presently called as a bishop there. Garna was well known for her selfless acts of kindness and charity and often befriended widows and those in need. Garna's most cherished roll was that of a mother and grandmother. With her husband she successfully raised and nurtured five grateful children and 22 adoring (and adored) grandchildren. Nothing brought her greater joy than putting a smile on the face of her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Milburn and Verla Hix, and a brother Delray Hix. Survivors include her husband, Dale Lloyd Mickelsen of Idaho Falls, daughters: Wendy (Kyle) Oswald of Idaho Falls, Dana (Lewis) Newman of Monteview, Idaho, and sons: Bryan (Holly) Mickelsen of Roberts, Idaho, Brent (Kristen) Mickelsen and Scott (Kristy) Mickelsen both of Idaho Falls, and a brother, Veldon (Arlene) Hix of Idaho Falls. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 1, 2010, at the Idaho Falls North Stake Center, 955 Memorial Drive, with Bishop Dave Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Monday, May 31, 2010, at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First Street, and from 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., Tuesday, June 1, 2010, at the church, prior to the services. Interment will be at the Fielding Memorial Cemetery following the Funeral Service. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.coltrinmortuary.com.
