Gary Lynn DeLong, 55, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, passed away Wednesday October 8, 2014, in Bingham County of a motorcycle accident. He was born to Paul DeLong and Peggy Roberts April 2, 1959, in Marysville, California. Gary was a curious student and an energetic young man. In 1976 Gary enlisted in the United States Navy. In 1981 Gary married Rhonda (Funk) DeLong and became father to Robert. In 1984 Gary and Rhonda welcomed their first daughter Janelle into their lives. Then in 1985 Gary was appointed to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. A year later their second daughter, Jessica, completed their family. In 1990 Gary was commissioned as a limited duty officer and selected for Naval Nuclear Propulsion. On December 18, 1992, Gary married his second wife Elisha. Elisha and Gary lived in Southern California where he became a stepfather to Elisha's sons Nick and Nathan. Before his retirement Gary was appointed to Lieutenant Commander where he completed his last duties on the USS John C. Stennis, (CVN74). In 2004 Gary and Elisha retired to Idaho Falls, Idaho, where they purchased a home and Gary went to work at the INL. Gary enjoyed working different positions and last worked as the Training Manager for the Advanced Test Reactor Programs. Gary enjoyed many outdoor activities. Gary was active in riding his Harley, ATV riding, fishing, camping, and hunting. Gary enjoyed being with family and friends as well as with strangers. Gary could start a conversation with anyone and enjoyed teaching and learning from others. Gary loved FOX News, Raiders football, and politics. Everyday Gary expressed his love and pride for his children and his grandchildren. Gary is survived by his mother Peggy Roberts (Bill), son Robert Christianson (Dee Dee), daughters Janelle Moore (Mike), Jessica Allred, step-sons Nick Holmes and Nathan Holmes (Lydia). Gary also leaves behind his 8 grandchildren, Addison, Lexie, Emmi, Ava, Jayden, Landon, William and Katie. Gary is preceded in death by his father, Paul Delong and his wife Elisha DeLong. Gary captured attention with his great smile and eyebrow raise. He was loved by many and will be missed dearly. The family will receive guests starting at noon on Monday, October 13, 2014. The services will begin at 1 p.m. at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First Street, Idaho Falls, Idaho.
