IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gary Lynn
Ivie
February 28, 1946 – April 13, 2023
Gary Lynn Ivie, 77, of Iona, passed away on Thursday, April 13, 2023, at the Idaho State Veterans Home in Pocatello, Idaho.
Gary was born on February 28, 1946, in Wendell, Idaho, to I. Worth Ivie and Dorothy Isabel Smith Ivie. He was the youngest of four children. His father was a certified potato farmer and his mother assisted on the farm in any way she could. He grew up on his family's potato farm in Mackay, Idaho, and graduated from Mackay High School in 1964.
After graduation, Gary joined the U.S. Navy. He served from May 1964-August 1966 in naval aviation. Gary was stationed in the Philippines. He served 6 months in Vietnam as a naval ordinance man.
Once Gary was discharged from the Navy, he returned home to help his father on the farm. He attended Idaho State University, earning his associate degree in automotive and diesel mechanics in 1971. He started working for Morrison Knudsen rebuilding Amtrak locomotives. Later, he went on to work in the heavy equipment industry for a phosphate mine. Gary spent the next 26 years working for an open pit coal mine in Kemmerer, Wyoming, before retiring.
On September 23, 1972, he married his sweetheart, Kathleen Bowman, in Montpelier, Idaho. Their marriage was solemnized in the Rexburg Temple on May 23, 2015. Together they had four children: Anita, Darin, Isabel, and Camille. He was extremely proud of his family and loved being a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He enjoyed 4-wheeling, hunting, fishing, camping, and just spending time with his family.
When his health declined, he was admitted to the Idaho State Veterans Home. He shared a room with a gentleman named Kelly. The two shared a close friendship.
Gary is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen Ivie of Iona, Idaho; his children: Anita (Lance) Walker of Rigby, Idaho; Darin (Cindy) Ivie of Chubbuck, Idaho, Isabel (Tyson) Hopkins of Chubbuck, Idaho, and Camille (Nathan) Jensen of Preston, Idaho; 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; his sisters: Dolores Rosenkrance of Mackay, Idaho, Karon Huggins of Arco, Idaho, Arvella (Lynn) Rothwell of Darlington, Idaho.
