Gene Richard Bell, 81, of Ammon, passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2020, at his home surrounded by his family. He was under the care of Hands of Hope Hospice.
Gene was born on September 14, 1938, in Barnesville, Ohio to Oscar Ray and Mary Elvira King Bell. He grew up in Barnesville. He graduated from Barnesville High School and went on to Ohio State where he earned his associate's degree.
In July of 1956, he joined the United States Navy. He was honorably discharged in August of 1978. While in the Navy he was able to travel all over the United States.
Gene married Betty Lou Stephens on May 19, 1957 in Liberty, Indiana. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. Betty passed away on July 15, 2017. Together they raised 4 children: Gene, David, Oscar, and Mary. He married Sydney Tew on January 8, 2018, and they were later sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many different callings. From 2001-2002, he served a mission with Betty to McAllen, Texas.
He is survived by his wife, Sydney Tew Bell of Ammon, ID; his children: Gene Richard (Brenda, deceased) Bell Jr. of Bellingham, WA, David (Allison) Bell of Bountiful, UT, Oscar (Jackie) Bell of Nephi, UT, and Mary (Jeff) Carter of Sugar City, ID; 23 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Bell; his daughter-in-law, Brenda Bell; and a grandson, Oscar Ray Bell.
Private graveside services will be at a later date in Teton Newdale Cemetery where military rites will be performed. Arrangements are under the care of Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First Street, Idaho Falls.
