Obituary

George Raymond Lewis, 86, of Ammon, passed away at his home on August 1, 2012. He was under the care of Aspen Home Health & Hospice. George was born December 31, 1925, in Worland, Missouri, the twin son of James Monroe Lewis and Tina Alice Montgomery Lewis. His twin brother died prior to their birth. George proudly served his country during World War II by serving in the Merchant Marines. He often talked of his many adventures and the places he had seen. A traveling harvest crew brought George to Jerome, Idaho, where he met and married the love of his life, Clara Dean Swainston on August 6, 1948. George and Clara Dean moved to Portland, Oregon, where he worked in the furniture manufacturing business. Their next home was in Jerome, where he worked in a seed plant and also bucked potatoes in the fields. Butte, Montana, was their next home and George tried his hand at hard rock mining with Clara Dean's brother, Morris, until spring when they returned to Jerome and farmed with Clara Dean's father for a year. The next move found them in Gooding and then once again to Butte for 30 years where George perfected his trade as a hard rock miner. George retired from the Anaconda Company in 1982 and used his FREE time to work in his beautiful yard, which was enjoyed by all who passed by. Declining health and wanting to be close to family, brought George and Clara Dean in September 2007, to their present home in Ammon. George loved to garden, feel the sun on his face, playing with his grandchildren, and watching Westerns such as Gunsmoke, The Rifleman, and Bonanza. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is survived by his dear wife, Clara Dean Lewis of Ammon; a daughter, Cheryl Bergen: a son, Walter Raymond (Kym) Lewis of Ammon; two granddaughters: Melissa Dan) Thornley and Cynthia (Brian) Beal; a grandson, Andrew (Rani) Bergen; four great grandsons and two great granddaughters; two brothers and three sisters. George was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and four brothers. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 4, 2012, at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First St., Idaho Falls, with Bishop Rodney Roberts of the Ammon 26th Ward officiating.
