Helen Thecla Spackman Smith passed away on Tuesday, December 03, 2013 at a local care center with family by her side. She was 91 years old. Helen was the second of seven children born to Edward Arthur and Thecla (Lindholm) Spackman. She arrived at 12:50 a.m. on January 18, 1922 in Afton, Lincoln County, Wyoming. She was one of only three children to survive beyond 19 years of age. The Spackman family homesteaded 40 acres near Freedom, Wyoming in Star Valley on Jackknife Creek in Bonneville County, Idaho. Helen attended local schools and Star Valley High School, graduating in 1941. After high school she enlisted in the US Navy as a W.A.V.E. (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service.) She served at bases in New York, Oklahoma, Texas and California. Following her discharge from the Navy, she married Joe John Smith in 1946. Three boys were born to this union, Randy in 1947, Larry in 1948 and Wayne in 1950. In 1952, Helen and Joe divorced. Helen was a protective mother and adored her three boys. She moved in with her parents for a while until she decided it was time to get out on her own. She felt moving to Idaho Falls would be good for her and the boys. In February 1953, she rented a home on Boise Avenue and, later two houses on J Street. In 1958, the family moved to a house on Idaho Avenue. After renting for many years she worked with her landlady to buy the home. Ten years later she owned her first home. She remained in her home for more than 50 years until she moved to Lincoln Court in Idaho Falls in 2010. Helen was active in the Idaho Falls 4th Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints serving in several callings throughout her life. She was a den mother for the Cub Scouts, including all three of her boys. She was the ward's church magazine representative for nearly 50 years. She became active in genealogy work and amassed two big binders of pedigree and ancestral records. She contacted her son's wives for information regarding their lineage after their marriages. Once her eyes began to fail she gave up on doing more ancestral work. She attended Beauty School after her youngest son entered high school. She worked for a local beauty shop for several years before opening her own shop near her home. A few years later she remodeled her home to serve her clients. She had many elderly clients living around the block or two. Some even came back after moving from the neighborhood. After her mother died and her father became feeble, she opened her home and took care of him until his death in 1985. She was of the mind, "Family First", when situations needed assistance. She worked tirelessly to meet her father's needs up to his death. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; an older sister, Nellie; younger sisters, Dorothy and Dorinda; a younger brother, Lester; and a granddaughter, Nikole Misseldine. She is survived by her sister, Loraine Jenkins of Logan, Utah and brother, Rex Spackman of Freedom, Wyoming; her three sons, Randy (LaVonna) Smith of Nampa, Idaho; Larry (Karen) Smith of Ammon, Idaho; Wayne (Eveline Maria) Smith of Lolo, Montana; ten grandchildren; and twenty-one great-grandchildren.
