IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Howard Henry
Halkar
February 16, 1955 – July 4, 2025
Howard Halkar of Idaho Falls lost his cancer battle on July 4th, 2025, at the age of 70.
He was born in Baraboo, Wisconsin, to Fred and Eunice Halkar and was the youngest of four children. The family moved to Idaho Falls and started Halkar's Danish Bakery, which was later sold and became Carsten's. Howard attended school in Idaho Falls and joined the Army National Guard and served for 13 years. He married Kathy Preston in 1977; they had three amazing kids and were later divorced.
Howard had a few jobs over the years, including making cheese at Challenge, custodian at Skyline High School, Camp Host, and eventually maintenance at CEI, where he retired in 2023. His favorite job, though, was Cook at Hagenbarth Ranch in Kilgore. I'm sure he would be there today if he could.
Dad loved the outdoors; his happy place was spending time fishing, camping, and metal detecting for treasures. When we were young, we spent every weekend with him, going on any adventure he thought would be fun. He was an amazing dad. He also enjoyed reading, woodworking, and removing the dash and door panels from his vehicles, making us all wonder why.
Dad was the funniest person I've ever known; he would do anything for a laugh. You never knew what was coming; it could be a made-up song, a funny joke, or even a nacho fight at the gas station, but it was definitely going to get a laugh. He was one of a kind and will be missed.
He is survived by his daughters Michelle (Brandt) Mickels of Lewisville, Missy Halkar of Idaho Falls; granddaughter, Henzlee; and his siblings Harry (Vickie) Halkar, and Linda Carter (Lynn) Beck. He was preceded in death by his Parents, sister Karen Halkar, and his son Steven Halkar. We miss you dad, and will see you in the next life.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, September 20, 1:00 p.m. at the Rigby Fair building, 319 Veteran Memorial drive. Come share stories of the best father, brother and friend you ever knew.
