Irel Douglas Church, 81, of Idaho Falls, passed away Tuesday, October 30, 2012, at his home of pancreatic cancer. He was born November 17, 1930, in Burley, Idaho, to Robert Holiday Church and Edna Leanore Paulson Church. He grew up and attended school in Burley. In 1949, he graduated from Burley High School and later attended Albion State Normal College. On January 28, 1950, he married Kathleen Goff in Rupert, Idaho. They were sealed in the Idaho Falls, LDS Temple on April 23, 1975. Irel began his career in retail business at age 11, and continued until his mid 70s, when he retired. He didn't mind retiring, but sure missed those he came in contact with each day. Irel was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as the ward clerk for 12 years and as a home teacher. He was a member of the Rotary Club and the Idaho Falls Golf Association. He enjoyed golfing and baseball. In 2012, his son and grandson took him on a road trip to see the Cardinals play at Busch Stadium; this had been a lifelong dream. Unfortunately, he was unable to meet Stan Musial, his childhood idol. Irel had a passion for life and loved his family more than anything. His greatest joy was his grandchildren and great grandchildren who knew him as "Grandpa Tootsie Pop" because you could never leave their home without your pockets stuffed full of tootsie pops. Irel is survived by his sweetheart of 62 years, Kathleen "Kay" Church; sons: Mike (Pam) Church of Cincinnati, Ohio; Kent (Linda) Church of Ucon; John (Elise) Church of Corpus Cove, Texas; and Scott (Cheri) Church of Hermatage, Tennessee; a brother, Lewis (Karen) Church of Saratoga Springs, Utah; 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Reed Church; and a daughter, Ann Tueller. Funeral services will be Saturday, November 10, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at the Idaho Falls LDS 26th Ward, 2025 Jennie Lee Drive, with Bishop Kenneth Rohde officiating. The family will visit with friends Friday evening from 6:30-8:00 at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First St., Idaho Falls, and Saturday one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery. The family would like to than Dr. Alan Avondet, Dr. Christian Shull and their staff's for their care of Irel.
