IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James Benwill
Dorst
October 3, 1933 – June 17, 2025
James (Jim) Benwill Jones Dorst, 91, of St. Anthony, passed away on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at Madison Carriage Cove.
Jim was born on October 3, 1933, in Freeport, Illinois, to Martin James Dorst and Mary Suzanna Jones Dorst. He spent his childhood days in the woods of Illinois and Wisconsin. In his junior year of high school, he was allowed to move to Pocatello to live with his brother, Hugh, where he graduated from high school and realized his dream of being a cowboy.
Soon after high school, he followed in his father and brothers' footsteps and joined the United States Marine Corps, earning his marksmanship medal and rising to the rank of sergeant. During this time, he served as a radio operator and later as an instructor on the rifle range, serving on active duty during the Korean War conflict.
After an honorable discharge, he moved to Arco, Idaho, where he operated a cheese factory for Kraft Foods. He soon went to work at the A & A Market in the capacity of butcher, which would become his profession. While employed there, he met and fell in love with Barbara Schwartz, with whom he would share almost 60 years of his life and three children, Marcene, Allison, and Marty.
Soon after the children left home, they sold the business and house, bought a camper, and spent years hosting campgrounds across the West. This time allowed him to pursue his true passion, painting. He created hundreds of works, which he gave to his family and those who meant the most to him.
Always quick with a joke, story, or smile, he shared his love for life with all those who were fortunate enough to cross his path.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Dorst; his brothers: Hugh, Clark, Clair, and Joe; his sister, Mary; his parents, Martin and Mary Dorst; and his great-grandson, Connor Hincks.
He is survived by his children: Marcene (Juan) Oldham, Allison (Tony) Mayer, and Marty (Audra) Dorst; his grandchildren: Kasandra, Brittani, Brandon, Colton, Cache, Cherri, Derek, Russell, Dillon, Brittany, Sam, Jared, Cody, Kristen, Michael, and Alex; as well as numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, who all thought the world of him.
James will be interred at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery with full military rites. Cremation is under the care of Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First Street, Idaho Falls. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.coltrinmortaury.com.
