IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James Edward
Huston
June 8, 1943 – December 3, 2022
It has been reported, (and independently confirmed), that Jim E Huston, Submariner, Businessman, and Engineer extraordinaire has taken his final deep dive into the Great Unknown.
Known for developing and completing many diverse projects such as the 9 Mile Nuclear power plant and water access projects across many third-world counties, he also provided major consulting services in England, France, the Netherlands, and many other places across the globe. In that time, he managed to travel over 2 million miles, travel on over 50 different airlines, and filled up 5 passports in his lifetime. To say he was well-traveled would be a great understatement.
Considered to be one of the hardest working men in his field, Jim also enjoyed life and knew how to have great fun. Some of his greatest hits include:
--Driving an original Formula 1 race car through the mountains of Argentina with a chase car behind him.
--Going on Safari and seeing the wild dogs of Africa.
--Seeing the Tour Eiffel in Paris explode with Fireworks at the turn of the century.
--Dancing the Ceililh in a kilt at Ackergill Tower, Scotland. (He never did reveal what Scotsman wear beneath their kilts.)
--Almost running straight into an Elephant one foggy night in India, while riding in a taxi.
The list goes on and on. He was as passionate about life as he was about work.
Many may wonder about his wife Patty, and where was she in all this? Turns out she was by his side for quite a few of his travels, and a large part of his life as a whole. Allowing her to live in countries like England, France, and The Netherlands. It must have been tough, but she hung by his side for 56 years and enjoyed it all. Together they traveled the world and shared great adventures. When reached for comment, Patty Huston stated, "I was never bored a single day in our life together. He was a man full of surprises."
When Jim retired, he and Patty built a home in Idaho Falls. In true Jim fashion, the house, which sits at the corner of 25th and S. Boulevard created much talk. People called it the Babe Ruth house, the Easter Egg House, and other playful things. He took up various hobbies and interests once the hubbub settled down. He was an active collector of WW2 M1 carbines, built black powder rifles and pistols, and actively went shooting with his son and grandsons. He was a Lifetime member of the NRA and was also a member of Ducks Unlimited. He was an accomplished artist and had a keen eye for color. He generously shared his drawings and watercolors with others. He also spent countless hours mentoring people around the community and in his family, sharing his vast wealth of knowledge and experience in many different fields. He became active in local activities as well. He was appointed to the Site Cleanup Committee in Idaho Falls. He was a major factor in preventing the Idaho Falls 4th of July parade from being moved to 17th street. At the Community Gardens in Idaho Falls, he helped teach kids how to plant corn like the Hopi Indians, which he learned from his earlier years working with archeological teams, surveying historic Indian sites on the Hopi Reservations of the southwest. He also earned his Master Gardener's Certificate alongside his daughter-in-law Colene.
For all of his many accomplishments, Jim was most proud of his service to his country. He joined the Navy at a young age and after basic training, was assigned to the Nuclear Power Training site located west of Idaho Falls. After successfully completing training, he was promoted and kept on as an instructor at the site for a couple of years. It was during this time he would meet and marry his wife, Patty. He was subsequently assigned to the submarine U.S.S. Mariano G Vallejo stationed out of Pearl Harbor during the Vietnam War. He was later honorably discharged and went on to get his Engineering Degree from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. He always stayed connected to his Submarine days. He was very active in submarine veteran's groups, and attended several reunions for his old sub, the V.G. Vallejo. He also volunteered and worked with the planning committee for the Vallejo. He was an active member of the local submarine group as well.
Jim was known for his love of his children. Son, John-Paul, and daughter, Katherine Emily. As well as adopted son Bradley Simonson (his biggest cohort in multiple conspiracies). But Jim was possessed of such a huge heart that his unofficial family grew by leaps and bounds over the years. He made lifelong friends no matter where he went and was always ready to engage with someone he did not know. He was able to build relationships and create personal connections with each individual he met.
He was a great source of inspiration for his grandchildren as well. Krysta-Rhiannon shared the love of arts and gardening with him. James would go on to join the Navy and together, he and Jim would have hours-long conversations about naval lore and share stories. Lance leaned on him for life experience and support. He mentored Arson in many areas of life and supported him greatly. All of the grandkids immensely enjoyed their times spent with him at the CM Ranch in Dubois, Wyoming, in the summer. All in all, he was the greatest supporter and adviser they ever had.
He was famous for his sense of humor which he appreciated in others. He was a gregarious man in life, and a real raconteur and bon vivant.
Following his older brother Bruce, Jim leaves behind his fraternal twin brother David. When reached for comment David stated, "I am proud of everything he did and said. A particular source of pride for Jim was his being a US Navy crew member of a nuclear submarine during Vietnam. He had a tremendous love for his children and grandchildren, He was a great artist, like his father before him. He will always be in my thoughts."
Brad Simonson said, "He will be missed by all who know him as well as two major Scotch distilleries."
In the end, as his travels take him beyond our realm and into the next, our wish for him is to be able to continue his lifelong motto of, "I prepare every day to be amazed."
His final passport stamp reads, "Pearly Gates".
He will be greatly missed by us all.
