Jane Margaret
McCartney
August 30, 1949 – May 28, 2026
Jane Margaret Lawrence McCartney, 76, passed away on May 28, 2026, at Idaho Falls Community Hospital. She died of complications from cirrhosis of the liver, under the care of Hospice of Eastern Idaho.
Jane was born on August 30, 1949, in Kansas City, Kansas, to Joseph Bernard Lawrence and Wana Lee Belle Winkler. She graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School in Shawnee, Kansas. She married James Droegemueller on October 18, 1968, and moved to Denver, Colorado, where her only son, James Droegemueller II, was born in 1973. After a divorce, she remarried Robert Jay “Mac” McCartney on September 27, 1979. The couple moved to Orlando, Florida, where Jane worked for the Hartford Insurance Company for many years. After retirement, she returned to the Kansas City area where she celebrated 25 years of marriage to Robert before he passed away in 2007. After struggling through widowhood, she moved to live near her son and family in Idaho Falls. Her last 18 months were spent living in their home, as they cared for her up until her last breath.
In her childhood, Jane was the delight of Grandmother Agnes, the fishing buddy of Grandpa Joel, and the confidante of her big brother, Joe. She had fond memories of Grandpa Billy and the Yellowstone region, and always loved bison and visiting Yellowstone or Cody, Wyoming. She is known for her love of horror and monster movies as well. She was Catholic as a youth, Lutheran during her first marriage, and converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1993. She loved family history and spent hours gathering names and sources for temple ordinances. She served as a family history missionary in Idaho Falls and as an ordinance worker in the temple.
She is survived by her son, James (Sarah) Droegemueller, Idaho Falls; stepson Jerry (Pat) Long, Alabama; sister Wally (Tim) Grosz; sister-in-law Linda Lawrence; many adored nieces and nephews; and four grandchildren, James III, Sam, Abby, and Augie. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Joseph Lawrence; and niece Angie Lawrence.
Memorial services will be held at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, Kansas, at a later date, so that she can be interred next to Robert. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Yellowstone Forever to support their conservation efforts. Cremation is under the care of Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First Street, Idaho Falls. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.coltrinmortuary.com.
