Obituary

Jay Charles Jenkins, 84, passed away on January 16, 2016 at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center from a cerebral hematoma. Jay was born April 4, 1931 to Charles Wilmer Jenkins and Luella Berrett Jenkins in the Menan area at his grandfather Berrett's home. They lived in Iona with his Grandpa Jenkins. They moved to York when he was six and attended the York grade school. His father passed away when he was 9 so they moved to Idaho Falls where he attended Eastside Grade School, O.E. Bell Junior High School, and Idaho Falls High School until his Junior year.

In 1949 he married Beverly H. Johnson at Beverly's parent's home at 310 7th St. in Idaho Falls. To this union were born six children: Permilla Ann, Luella Marie, Charles Lloyd, Lawrence Earl, John Lewis and Jacqueline Lucy. Jay was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where he was sealed in the Idaho Falls LDS temple in 1988.

He started working with Lloyd Nash, his stepfather, at age 14 making 25 cents/hour. At age 15 he became the youngest member of the Cement Masons Union.. He did concrete work all over Idaho, Wyoming, Arizona, and Montana. Some of his projects included the IF Civic Auditorium, Paramount Theater (Colonial Theater), Bowlero Bowling Alley, Joe Marmo/Wayne Lehto Ice Arena, IF Post Office, many real estate projects, multiple buildings at the INL in the 50s and 60s, many LDS churches, and bank buildings with their concrete vaults.

He also completed building foundations on hillsides and between the trees in the Targhee National Forest in Island Park which was a complicated task attempting to maneuver concrete trucks through the dense forest. He poured a foundation base for the Sawtell FAA RADAR Tower which required 45 concrete trucks loaded with 10 yards of concrete each. People said, "If you want a good job done get hold of Jay Jenkins."

In 1979 he traveled to Wyoming to help a friend on a project in the oil field and eventually worked there for the next 8 years.

He had a love for fishing, hunting, camping and sitting around a campfire singing and telling stories, but most of all he loved his family and enjoyed visits with them and his many friends.

He was preceded in death by his oldest son Chuck, youngest daughter Jackie, parents, brothers Keith and Bob Jenkins, stepsister Daisy Richmond, stepbrother Lorenzo (Ren) Nash, son-in-¬law Joe Barker and grandson Rod Creasey.

He is survived by his wife Beverly, two daughters, Permilla Barker and Marie Nesbit, two sons, Earl (Laura) and John (Virginia) Jenkins, half¬-sister Dona Daw, half¬-brother Thomas Nash, 13 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 25 at the Idaho Falls Willow Creek Ward, 6925 N. 15th E. (St. Leon Road). Family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, January 24 at the Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 1st St. and one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
