Obituary

Jay T. "Smitty" Smith, 79, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, died Tuesday, October 13, 2009, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. He was born March 22, 1930, in Iona, Idaho, to Tom and Mildred Atkins Smith. He grew up and attended schools in Iona, and graduated from Iona High School. He served in the United States Army, where he met and married Dolores "Mace" Macioce, on July 5, 1952, at the Post Chapel in Landstuhl, Germany, where they were both stationed. They have been married for 57 years. He was a professional Rodeo Cowboy and held a gold card. He was inducted in to the Idaho Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2002. He was the head trainer at the Les Bois Park and a world champion cutter racer. He was an avid fisherman and sole proprietor of the Salmon River Hilton. He was the operator of Big Red for Isom Farming Enterprises. He loved to rodeo, train horses, hunt and fish. Jay T. was a real cowboy, true horseman and avid fisherman, but the legacy he leaves behind is his family, those with his name, and those who shared his heart. We'll miss you Dad, Grandpa, Uncle Jay, Smitty, Twister. He is survived by his wife, Dolores "Mace" Smith of Idaho Falls; son, J. Victor "Skitter" Smith of Idaho Falls; daughter, Mariann Schiewe of Temecula, California; son, Lynn (Sophia) Smith of Idaho Falls; and Jay and Lynn Roach of Idaho Falls; brother, Bob (Maxene) Smith of Idaho Falls; sister, Dixie Hunting of Idaho Falls; sister, Ione (Keith) Hackwell of Boise, Idaho; brother, Royce Smith of Challis, Idaho; sister, Peggy McCurdy of Idaho Falls; grandchildren, Jake, B.J., Lynnzie, Jade, Casey, Chad, Kelsey and Chance; and great-grandchildren, Leah and Jayah He is preceded in death by his son, Vance J. "Boe" Smith, son, Jay T. Smith Jr., a sister, Joan Peterslie, a brother, James B. Smith, and great-granddaughter, Jaden Schiewe. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 17, 2009, at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First Street, Idaho Falls. The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 p.m., Friday, October 16, 2009, at Coltrin Mortuary and one hour prior to the services at the mortuary. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund, 101 Pro Rodeo Drive, Colorado Springs, Colorado, 80919.
