Obituary

William James "Jim" Allred was born on January 12, 1957, in Rigby, Idaho, and passed away from a long battle with Early On-set Alzheimer's Disease on July 21, 2025, at the Homestead Assisted Living in Rexburg, Idaho.  Special recognition for the care and consideration given by Homestead and Homestead Hospice. They were a huge part of making his last few years comfortable and enjoyable.

He was born to William Paul Allred and Genevie Guidinger Allred.  Jim grew up on the family farm in Lorenzo, Idaho, where he helped extensively with the farming operation, raised pigs, milked cows, and his favorite chore, irrigating.  Jim learned from his dad at an early age how to build and fix everything.

He attended school in Rigby and graduated from Rigby High School in 1975.  He then attended Idaho State University, where he received a degree in Metrology.  He began working for EG&G in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1978. He transferred from EG&G in Las Vegas to the Idaho National Lab in 1980.

He married Shelly Riggan on April 28, 1984.  Shelly had a son, Tyler Russ, who was four.  They built a log house at the end of the family farm in Lorenzo in 1985.  He worked a full day at the Site, then came home and worked on the house almost every day.  They were able to move in after only six months.  There wasn't much that Jim couldn't build or fix, and that was before the age of "YouTube".

They welcomed a boy, Shawn William, in the spring of 1985 and a daughter, Kristen Renae, in the spring of 1987.

Jim attended Idaho State University again and received his Bachelor's Degree in Electronic Systems Technology in 1993, which furthered his career at the INL.  He managed the Standards and Calibrations Lab at the Central Facility (INL).  He was a Board Member with NCSLI (National Calibrations & Standards Labs International) for many years and traveled extensively for conventions and meetings.  He also conducted independent assessments of other calibration labs throughout the United States.

In his free time, he loved doing anything outdoors; fishing, hunting, camping, skiing, motorcycle riding, you name it. Over his short life, he was constantly "flipping" things such as boats, trailers, vehicles, houses, ATVs, etc.

Jim was the nicest, most easy-going guy you will ever meet. He went out of his way to help others, passed his skills down, led by example, always took care of his family, and was the best Husband, Son, Father, Brother, Grandpa, and friend.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Genevie Allred; a stillborn brother, Gregory; his sister, Pamela Allred Valentine and Brother-in-law Richard Mehl.

He is survived by his wife, Shelly Allred; step-son, Tyler (Jen) Hill; son, Shawn (Whitney) Allred; daughter, Kristen (Jared) Radford; siblings: Paula Allred (Richard), Kathie (Bill) Phoenix, Brother-in-law, Wayne Valentine (Pam), Daniel (Linda) Allred, Melanie (Kevin) Wetzel; and grandchildren: Mackenzie (Gavin) Thomas, Brynlee Allred, Olivia Hill, Lydia Allred, Jackson Karraker, Emma Radford, and Raelynn Radford.
