John L Dalling, 95, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 6, 2016, at Promontory Point Rehabilitation in Ammon, Idaho surrounded by his family.
John was born October 22, 1920, in Sugar City, Idaho, to William Ricks Dalling and Sarah Ethel Orme Dalling. He was the third of seven children-five boys and two girls. John worked on the family farm with his father and brothers. He attended high school in Sugar City excelling in football, basketball, and track. John graduated from high school in 1938.
Later he met Mildred Jane Jenkins. They were married June 18, 1941, in the Salt Lake City Temple.
John served in the U.S. Army during World War II, leaving behind a wife and 2 children. He was in the 1st Infantry Division and participated in the invasion of Normandy on Omaha Beach.
Both he and Mildred were active members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. John served in the many church callings. He served as Bishop in Moore, Idaho ward and the Idaho Falls 10th Ward. He also served as a counselor in the stake presidency and on the high council. Later he was called as the patriarch for the Idaho Falls North Stake. He served in the Idaho Falls Temple as an ordinance worker and sealer from 1985-2014.
He and Mildred were blessed with 4 children and 20 grandchildren prior to Mildred's passing. On November 23, 1984, he married Artell Richins Rowberry, three years after Mildred's passing. Two more boys joined his family, Mick and David Rowberry.
John worked as a sales manager for Southland Produce. He also served as president of the Idaho Potato Growers.
John was a very humble man with many friends. He loved working with the youth. He was intermountain region sports director for the LDS athletic program. He was also a founding member of the Grid Kid football program in Eastern Idaho and served as the vice-president of that program until 1983. John will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; both wives; a daughter, Betty Smith; a son, Steven Dalling; a sister, Vola Bagley; brothers: Lyle, Val and Lynn; son-in-law, William Staley; daughter-in-law, Nedra Dalling, and grandson, Scott Staley.
John is survived by his brother, Glenn (Dorothy) Dalling; sister, Elva Rose; sister-in-law, Revola Dalling; children: Ken (Bobbie) Dalling, Joann Staley, Mick (Rena) Rowberry and David (Janis) Rowberry; son-in-law, Lynn (Jane) Smith; 27 grandchildren, 61 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
The family greatly appreciates the care given to our Dad by his children, Ken and Bobbie Dalling and Joann Staley; his grandchildren: Angela (Eric) Sackett, Deb Rouho, Chantel Smith, Daryl and Toni Dalling; his nephew, Max Rose; 18th ward members and many others. Your service is greatly appreciated and will not be forgotten.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 13, 2016, at the Idaho Falls LDS 18th Ward Chapel, 1200 Dunbar with Bishop Shawn Orgill officiating. The family will visit with friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, August 12 at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First St. and Saturday at the church one hour prior to the services. Burial will be in the Iona Cemetery.
