John Orson Young, 66, of Idaho Falls, drowned while ice fishing at Palisades Reservoir on Dec. 30, 2009. He was born Dec. 28, 1943, in Holly, Michigan, to Floyd Edward Young and Margaret Irene (Shields). He grew up in Holly and graduated from Holly High School. He went on to attend and graduate from Michigan State University, in Lansing with a Bachelor's Degree in chemistry. He then moved to Idaho Falls where he had been hired by Idaho National Laboratory (INEL), working at Argonne-West. While working for INEL, he attended night courses to complete his Master's Degree. He worked at Argonne-West for 35 years and retired to do what he loved best-hunting, fishing, and being in the outdoors. He married Linden Ririe Smith on Feb. 1, 1974, and adopted her four children. They had three more children. They were later divorced. He married Mary Ellen Ottesen on Aug. 20, 1988, she has three children. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where he was serving as the High Priest Group Leader in the Coltman Third Ward. He served in many capacities from a Primary teacher, deacon and teacher's counselor, elder's quorum presidency, and second counselor in the bishopric. He frequently attended the temple and was currently serving as an ordinance worker at the Idaho Falls Temple for the last year. He was constantly involved with youth sports and the Boy Scout program where he served as scoutmaster on several occasions. He routinely volunteered his time to support scouting events and led two 50-mile hikes, one through Yellowstone National Park and the other through Copper Basin near Mackay, Idaho. He was very influential in all his sons achieving their Eagle Scout badges. He was an avid outdoorsman, hunter, and most of all loved to ice-fish. He was a great gardener and would give most of the produce to friends and neighbors along with all the fish he caught. He loved sports and competed on many teams throughout the years. He never turned down a chance to play a game of football with kids and grandkids. He had a creative nickname for each one of his grandkids.
