Obituary

Juan Alberto Gonzalez, 75, of Ucon, Idaho, passed away peacefully at home on March 30, 2025, after a valiant fight with cancer. He was surrounded by the family he cherished above all else.

Juan was born on October 28, 1949, in New York City, New York. Juan lived a life as colorful as it was full. A true adventurer at heart, he hitchhiked across the United States, was a merchant marine, worked for a traveling circus, and embodied a spirit of boundless resourcefulness and tenacity. He seized every opportunity that came his way, making the most of his talents and experiences.

For twenty-six years, he was a proud member of SEIU 32BJ, working as a doorman and porter at The Hendrik Hudson on Riverside Drive in Manhattan. His work was more than just a job—it was a reflection of his heroic spirit. He took his role seriously, protecting the residents of his building with great courage. During his service, he intervened in attempted robberies and even saved residents from potentially deadly fires, embodying the true spirit of a guardian.

In his later years, Juan found deep purpose in his faith, serving as a hospital chaplain for twelve years and as an elder at Mountainview Christian Center in Idaho Falls, where he remained active until his condition would no longer allow it. Still, even in his weakened state, he continued to pray for his church family faithfully and think of them often.

Above all, Juan's greatest joy and priority was his family. He was a devoted husband to Frances DeMartino Gonzalez for forty-two years, a loving father to his daughter Josephine Paolini, and a cherished father-in-law to Christopher Paolini. He is also survived by several siblings and extended family members who will miss him dearly.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mountainview Christian Center in Juan's memory.

A Celebration of Life will take place at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 12, 2025, at Mountainview Christian Center, 4475 North Ammon Road, Idaho Falls, with the Rev. Christopher Paolini and the Rev. Josephine Paolini officiating. Cremation is under the direction of Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First Street, Idaho Falls.
