Obituary

Kay Leon Johnson, 82, of Ammon, passed away on December 3, 2020.  He was under the care of the caring folks of Hands of Hope Hospice and the comforting facility, The Gables, of Idaho Falls, ID.

Kay was born January 25, 1938, in Idaho Falls, ID, on a bright snowy day to Wealthy Jane Pincock and Raymond Kenneth Johnson.  Four big sisters were waiting anxiously for news from the hospital in Idaho Falls, ID.  The news they took to school that morning was an unexpected surprise – two tiny babies – a sister (Karin) and a brother (Kay).

Kay grew up in Sugar City and graduated from Sugar Salem High School, where he was elected as Student Body President.  He gracefully overcame many challenges in his life.  One of those challenges was when their father left them when Kay was about the age of five, making him the only man in the house.  He learned to overcome and work hard to help support his family and probably missed out on multiple childhood experiences. Because of those challenges, he was an exceptional father to us.

He held multiple jobs growing up, such as, milking cows, picking potatoes, construction, and running the projector at the local movie theater in the projection booth, where he loved to sneak in mom.  He later, after they were married, attended Ricks College and Utah State University where he majored in Industrial Arts graduating second in his class. Dad was employed by the U.S. Government as a nuclear safety Engineer for 30 years and wrote the safety manual on hoisting and rigging which is still in use today.

Dad was all things perfection.  He had the patience and was talented.  He built our home in Jameston, along with help from the family.  He rebuilt a car from the frame up that was at one time totaled.  He built our grandfather clock and was an amazing woodworker as many of you have seen through your gift of the music boxes.  Dad got the greatest pleasure out of the thank you he would get after gifting them.  He said it meant more than the piece itself. All 117 recipients held a special place in Dad and Mom's hearts.

He was an outdoorsman.  He loved hunting, floating & fishing on the Teton River with his boys, and camping. He was a story-teller and had a story or a joke for anyone that would listen.  We are all going to miss our daily joke call.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  He had a love for his Savior and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  He had a firm testimony of the plan of salvation and was not shy about sharing it with others.  He held multiple positions in the church including, Young men's president, High counselor, Sunday School Teacher, Counselor in multiple bishoprics, Bishop of the Jameston Ward, and lastly, Ward Clerk of the Stonehaven Ward.

Kay is survived by his sons Randall (Susan) Johnson of Draper, UT;  Kelly (Kari)Johnson of Boise, ID;  daughters Kristy (Rick) Andrade of Rowlett, TX;  Stacy Yates of Trenton, NJ; 12 Grandchildren and 1 Great Grandchild.  He has another Great-Grandchild coming this February 1 st that he will get to meet before we do.

Kay was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, his parents, 5 sisters, 1 half brother, Theron R. Johnson, and his grandsons, Spencer and Mitchell Johnson.

Together in life and death, we will be holding a double service for both Kay and Joyce.  Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a small family & close-friend service will be held at 11:00 a.m., December 12, 2020, at the Stonehaven Ward Chapel, 2055 Coronado Drive, Idaho Falls, with Bishop Mark Taylor officiating.  There will be a viewing from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the funeral service. He will be laid to rest in Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery, Idaho Falls, ID.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hands of Hope Hospice, 1379 E. 17th Street, Idaho Falls, ID 83404.  Thank you to Kathy, Lorie, and the staff of Hands of Hope Hospice and Alexis Johnson as well as the rest of the staff at The Gables.
