IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Keith
Cook
August 20, 1932 – November 21, 2016
Myron "Keith " Cook, 84, was born August 20, 1932, in Lyman, Madison County, Idaho to Myron Frank Cook and Gladys Rose Clay. Keith attended grade school in Lyman until about 1944. Afterwards, the family moved to Laketown,Utah for three years before finally settling in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Keith attended Idaho Falls High School.
In 1950 at the age of 17 years old Keith joined the navy. He served in the Korean War at the invasion of Incheon on the USS Hector. President Truman then extended Keith one more year where he served on the mine sweeper USS Sparrow. Keith was discharged in May 1954.
In March 1955 Keith met the love of his life Dorothy Faye Newsome in Pocatello, Idaho. They were married eight months later on October 28,1955 in the Assembly of God Church in Pocatello, Idaho . Fishing and family picnics at Cherry Springs and Justice Park became a large part of their entertainment.
The couple had their first child Myron Danny Cook, born in Pocatello, Idaho.
And soon after they had a daughter Roxene Danette Cook, born in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
The family moved to Idaho Falls where Keith worked for Ready to Pour Concrete, Picket & Nelson Construction and Weathertitie Block Company as a truck driver.
Keith became a cub scout leader and coach for the scouts ball team. He also led their church (1st Congregational) youth group for several years. The family spent much of their time fishing and hiking, they especially loved exploring the Arco Desert west of Idaho Falls where many homesteads were found.
On August 21, 1963 an identical set of twin daughters Wendy Faye and Sandy Kay Cook were born in Idaho Falls. Born premature it was with much sadness the twins did not survive. As Keith and Dorothy have always said "You learn to live with this loss but you never get over it".
In 1966, Keith went to work at the INEL (then called AEC) as a bus driver. By the time he retired in February 1995 Keith had driven a total of 1,064,000, earning him the "Million Mile" award.
After his retirement, Keith and Dorothy spent the summer exploring Canada and Alaska with their 5th wheel.
For 15 years Keith and Dorothy would spend the weekends in the Little Lost Valley fishing, camping and hunting with family and friends. These were Keiths happiest and most treasured memories.
In 1997 the couple sold their 5th wheel and bought a model home in Arizona where they would spend their winters for the next 11 years. Of course they could never leave until Keith bagged his elk for the season. While in Arizona Keith also discovered he had a natural talent for wood carving.
Tired of not being home to spend time with their family especially for holidays, they sold their home in Arizona and moved back to Idaho Falls. During this time Keith returned to one of his favorite past times and drove truck for his nephew (Brad Reed Farms) during the potato harvest. He also went to work part-time for VIP Construction which later turned into a full-time job. Keith FINALLY decided it was time to retire permanently at the age of 71 years old.
Keith would then spend his time fishing (especially at Blackfoot Reservoir) , gardening, doing yard work and exploring his talent for wood carving. He placed several of his animal wood carvings in the Eastern Idaho State Fair where each one took a blue ribbon. Keith also loved to pick Huckleberries, Dorothy would then make two of his favorite deserts huckleberry muffins and dumplings .
He is survived by his wife, son Dan (Nancy) Cook, Ogden,Utah daughter Danette (Steve) Vance Idaho Falls, 4 grandchildren, Brendan Cook, Amanda Redford ,Rebecca Cook, all from Ogden, Utah and Mikayla Vance Jeppesen, Baker, Montana. Keith also had six great grandchildren.
