Lewis Grant Nielsen, 77, of Idaho Falls, died January 21, 2006, at his home of emphysema and cancer caused by smoking. He had been under the care of Aspen Home Health and Hospice.
He was born February 11, 1928, in Coltman, Idaho, to Marie and Clifford Nielsen. He attended school in the little red Crowley school house, which is now a boutique located on the Ririe Highway.
On April 16, 1949, he married Wydena Schuldt. Lewis lived and worked in the local area all of his life. He worked as a city policeman for 16 years achieving the rank of Lieutenant. He received two commendations from J Edgar Hoover. He was a deputy sheriff for 11 years and in 1993, he retired as a jailer from the Bonneville County Sheriff's office.
In 1990, he was presented the Idaho Falls Jaycees Outstanding Community Service award. He also served as president of the local snowmobile club in 1972.
He enjoyed golf and was renowned for his work on the golf carts at Sand Creek Golf Course.
Just before this past Christmas, Lewis said, "My wife and our four kids are my most prized possessions."
He is survived by the following: wife, Wydena Nielsen of Idaho Falls children: DiAnn Simon of Ammon Bruce (Judy) Nielsen of Kennewick, WA Brian (Ann) Nielsen of Ogden, UT Dan (Jonna) Nielsen of Idaho Falls 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren sister, Shirley (Jack) Stiles of Idaho Falls
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Pete (Yuko) Nielsen; a sister, Goldie (Max) Hales; and a granddaughter, Wendy.
At his request, private family services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First St. in Idaho Falls.
